Heartbreaking Photo Of Mother And Her Baby Detained In LUTH For 4 Months Over Unpaid Bills

Busayo and her child Photo: Deji Lambo

According to a report by Punch Metro, the husband of a patient at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba, Surulere, Mutiu Busari, has said his wife, Busayo, and their baby, Fikayo, have spent over four months in the hospital over unpaid medical bills.

The 32-year-old lamented that his family owed LUTH about N387,200 after Busayo was delivered of Fikayo through a caesarian section.

Mutiu said his wife went into labour on February 27, 2018, after she was referred to LUTH from the Gbagada General Hospital.

“When we got to LUTH, we were told to do some tests and buy some drugs, which finished all my money. They did the CS the following day and our baby was safely delivered.

My wife and baby were discharged on Saturday, March 17, and we were told to pay N61,000 for the drugs my family used from the pharmacy before they can give us the remaining bills.

“I have paid N10,000 from the money. I have no money left on me and the people I have sought help from have just been promising. Aside from the drug bills, I still owed N65,000 for the operation, N20,000 for registration, N14,200 per week for bed space and we have spent four months already.

“Nurses and guards at the hospital are always watching us. They do not allow anyone with outstanding bills to go out until the bills are settled.

In fact, during my child’s christening, we begged the nurses to give us a space and we were given a room in the ward where we named the baby Fikayomi in the presence of my aunt, a pastor, my brother and his wife,” he added.

He said he had not returned home since he took his wife to LUTH because he believed neighbours would query him on the whereabouts of both mother and child.

The Osogbo, Osun State indigene, said he had also been struggling to feed his wife and the baby at the hospital.

“I have gone as far as donating blood to raise N6,000 to feed them. I have also gone to construction sites to carry granite and cement to get money; it has been tough for me. I don’t know where to get the hospital bill of over N387,000 from,” he said.

Punch Metro learnt that Mutiu contacted the Public Advice Centre, Lagos State Ministry of Justice, to appeal for funds.

The government agency on his behalf reportedly wrote a non-governmental organisation, Hope for Women in Nigeria, owned by the wife of the state governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode.

It was gathered that Mutiu had yet to receive any support as Busayo and Fikayo were still in Ward C2, LUTH. Busayo told our correspondent that she was fed up with living in the hospital.

“I have been here since February. Although the hospital has discharged us, we cannot go home because we have not paid our bills,” she said.

The Deputy Chairman, Medical Advising Committee, LUTH, Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo, while denying that the hospital detained Busayo and her baby, said a lot of patients owed the hospital.

He said, “LUTH is not a detention centre; we don’t have the means to detain anybody. Why will a hospital of this nature detain a patient when we know that the more you stay in the hospital, the more you don’t make bed space available for other patients?

“What they call detention is that a patient has been discharged, but for one reason or the other he or she is unable to pay, or has refused to pay. There are instances where some patients can really afford to pay their medical bills, but they think that if they stay for a long time the hospital will just allow them to go.

“When patients come in through the Accident and Emergency Unit, the policy of the government does not allow us to send them back; we have to treat them, whether they have money or not. So, once the patients are OK and discharged, it is expected that the money for drug, investigation, blood, admission and others should be paid back because we treated them based on trust.

“We have what is called revolving fund. For example, for the pharmacy, we have what is called drug revolving fund – a pool of money set aside to buy drugs for patients to use and pay back to that pool, so that whenever patients come to the hospital, drugs will be available.

It is expected of every patient to pay for that; if they don’t pay, that pool will be depleted. Also, there are some facilities that are sponsored by the Public Private Partnership. You can’t use those facilities without paying.”

The Public Relations Officer, LUTH, Mr Kelechi Otuneme, said the hospital needed patients to replace what they had used for the benefit of others. He said, “We are not asking for profit; we are asking you to replace the consumables we have used for you, so that another person that needs such a service can benefit from it.” It was learnt that the medical bill had been reduced to N93,000 after the intervention of some social workers. Despite the reduction, Busayo and her child had yet to leave the hospital.

A woman has been terribly shocked to suddenly find out that she owed as much as $284 billion in electric bill.
An American woman from Pennsylvania, got the shock of a lifetime when she checked her electric bill online and found that she owed more than $284 billion.

A spokesperson for First Energy, Penelec’s parent company, told GoErie.com that he wasn’t sure how the error had happened, but that, “I can’t recall ever seeing a bill for billions of dollars. We appreciate the customer’s willingness to reach out to us about the mistake.”

Nigerian Couple Cry Out Over Threats To Forcibly Circumcise Their Daughters

A couple based in Warri, have cried out over alleged attempts by members of their family to forcibly mutilate the genitals of their daughters.
The husband Value Onehireba Ewansubhor, a former banker, and his wife, Ese Joy, a lawyer via a joint statement, alleged they were being pressurized by people to circumcise their 10-year-old and 7-year old twin daughters.
According to the couple, they decided on letting the public know hoping this would stop those allegedly pressurizing them to stop.
The couple in an interview with Vanguard said;
Since early 2017, some members of my wife’s family have been pressurizing us to release to them our three daughters, to have them circumcised.
I have done everything possible with my wife to get them to drop the idea but to no avail. They are bent on mutilating the girls’ genitals, insisting that it is the historical practice by which their people preserve their ladies, curtail their sexual arousal and keep them in check.
With their insistent and a threat recently to ensure that the three girls are circumcised, whether we like it or not, we are appealing to government and the general public to prevail on these people, some of whom are members of my wife’s family in Uvwie LGA of Delta State, to leave the three children alone as we do not want them circumcised.
Although we realize that this is an age-long standing tradition of large-scale practice in Urhobo land, we are by virtue of our religion and education not willing to make our children to go through the experience and insist that it is a tradition that should be put behind us in this age and times.
The wife added;
We don’t know what to do anymore, we are forced to cry to the public as they have now resorted to threatening us, vowing that once it’s time to have the children circumcised, they know how to go about it to ensure that it is done. We are scared and afraid that our daughters’ lives are under there

My Husband Turned Me To Atm And A Punching Bag – Nigerian Woman Cries Out

Mrs Olalere had earlier told the court that her marriage of 11 years to her husband, Amidu Olalere, had been full of bitterness resulting from constant battery.
Igando Customary Court in Lagos has dissolved the marriage between Mrs Adeola Olalere and her husband, Amidu, over constant battery.
“I have fainted seven times during frequent beating by my husband. I sometimes landed in the hospital and regained consciousness two to three days after.
“Recently, he beat me to the point that I fainted and I was hospitalised for four days.
“When I was on admission, none of his family members came to see me and we all live in a family house. My husband also refused to pay the bills.
“There was a day he dragged me outside, stripped me naked and descended on me, using me as a punching bag. He did not stop until he saw blood coming out of my body.
“He is so rough, quarrelsome and violent in nature,” the mother of four said, describing her husband as a chain smoker and alcoholic.
“Whenever he brings his friends home to smoke and I complain, he will beat the hell out of me and will not leave me until I faint,” Adeola said.
The 39-year-old trader alleged that her husband had “turned me into his Automated Teller Machine as he collects money from me to give to his friends to buy Indian hemp.
“If I refuse to give him, it is always war in the house,’’ she added.
The petitioner urged the court to terminate the marriage, and that she was no longer interested because her husband might kill her one day.
“Please, end this loveless marriage; I may not be lucky to regain consciousness next time my husband beats me to a pulp,” she said.
Aminu, however, did not deny the allegation of battery.
“I beat her regularly because she is very stubborn and does not obey my orders; anytime we have a misunderstanding and I slap her, she retaliates and that makes me get angry the more,” he said.
The respondent accused his wife of starving him of sex.
According to him, whenever he reports the wife to the mother, she will ask him how many times he will be having sex with her daughter.
“My mother-in-law would ask me not to kill her with sex, instead of admonishing her,” he said.
He said his wife was going out without permission, and that he was the one cooking and washing the children’s school uniform on such occasions.
According to him, his wife moved out of his house with the children in January to stay with her mother.
The defendant said the mother-in-law would rain curses on him whenever he called the wife to return home.
“There was a day my mother-in-law cursed me, and I also cursed her that thunder would kill her.”
The President of the court, Mr Akin Akinniyi, said while delivering judgment in the case on Friday that the petitioner was adamant despite all mediation by the court and family members.
“Since the petitioner insisted on divorce after several interventions, the court has no choice than to dissolve the union in spite of the fact that the husband claims he still loves his wife.
“The court has pronounced the marriage between Mrs Adeola Olalere and Mr Amidu dissolved today; both parties henceforth cease to be husband and wife.
“Both are free to go their separate ways without any hindrances and molestation,” Akinniyi said.

So Touching!! I Have Been Crawling On The Ground For Over 20 Years – 31-Year-Old Crippled Man

A 31-year-old crippled man, Mr. Nelson Akpowone, says he has been crawling on the ground for over 20 years.
Akpowone got emotional while receiving a wheelchair during a medical outreach organised by the National Association of Seadogs (NAS) for residents of Ilodo-Ijebu and environs in Ijebu-East Local Council Development Area of Ogun State.
Akpowone (left, front row), fellow villagers and NAS members during the outreach
He said the wheel chair would enable him move round, adding that he would wish to further his education.
The crippled man said, “I commend NAS for this rare gesture because I have been crawling on the ground for 20 years and, with the wheel chair, I can move around. I am planning to study further if help comes my way.”
Another 88-year-old woman, Mrs. Oyinade Erugbe, who also got wheel chair following her inability to walk, also commended NAS for the gesture.
In an emotion-laden voice, Erugbe said, “I am elated that this association has come to my rescue by donating this wheel chair and crutches to me. I had wished for a long time.”
More than 250 other villagers benefitted from the free medical mission.
Speaking at the occasion, the National President of NAS, Chief Arthur Boje, said the community was singled out for the medical mission as a result of lack of primary healthcare centre in the area.
Boje, who ascribed the failure of leadership to the poor healthcare delivery in the country, explained that the mission was part of the activities to mark the NAS Quarter One Pyrates Working Committee meeting held in Ijebu-Ode.
The NAS leader, who is a United Kingdom based lawyer, said Nigerian leaders should be ashamed of themselves for their inability to provide social amenities for the people who elected them.
He said, “We go to neglected community and it is basically due to the failures of our various leaders to provide healthcare facilities in remote areas, just like this. We are here to provide free medical facilities, free medical care to the communities that are disadvantaged”.
The Coordinator of NAS in Ijebu-Ode and environs, Mr. Jamal Apena, said the choice of Ilodo-Ijebu for the medical mission was to draw government’s attention to the plight of the people.
At the end of the one-day exercise, the NAS Head of Medicals, Dr. Bassey Ntekim, said the medical team was able to examine 256 people for health challenges ranging from hypertension to diabetes, malaria, chest pain and eye test.
He said they also de-wormed all the children in the community, saying they also came with ambulance in case of any emergency.
