Angola's Yellow Fever Death Toll Hits 300

Angola's yellow fever outbreak has killed more than 300 people since December, with cases of the deadly disease spreading to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and even China, the World Health Organization has said.

The outbreak was first detected in the capital Luanda at the end of last year, and has now been confirmed in most coastal and central regions of the west African country.

"Angola has reported 2,536 suspected cases of yellow fever with 301 deaths," WHO said in an update released Thursday.

"Despite vaccination campaigns in Luanda, Huambo and Benguela provinces, circulation of the virus persists in some districts."

WHO warned of unimmunised travellers spreading the virus after neighbouring DR Congo reported 41 cases imported from Angola, with two cases in Kenya and 11 in China.

"The outbreak in Angola remains of high concern due to persistent local transmission in Luanda despite the fact that more than seven million people have been vaccinated," WHO said.

There is no specific treatment for yellow fever, a viral hemorrhagic disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes and found in tropical regions of Africa and Latin America's Amazon region.

Benue Again: Herdsmen Take Over Governors’ Country Home, Kill 50 Of His Kinsmen

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, has disclosed that his country home has been sacked by Fulani mercenaries who also killed over 50 of his kinsmen after which they razed over 200 hectares of his rice farm.

He lamented that the incessant killings and destruction of lives and property in the Benue had created a 25 year retrogression of development in the state. The Governor made this known when he received the All Progressives Congress, APC Governors’ Forum led by Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state, who paid him condolence visit over the invasion of Agatu and other parts of Benue by the herdsmen.

According to him, “the mercenaries invaded my village, killed over 50 persons and destroyed over 200 hectares of my rice farm. As I am sitting here, I have no ancestral home, they killed children, old men and women in my community.”

“The mercenaries come to Benue not just to graze but to steal, kill and destroy the livelihood of the agrarian people after which they take possession of the land knowing fully well that all we have here are our farms.”

“The truth is that these attacks have brought a major setback to the people especially with our declining revenue from the federal allocation which was about N7 billion before I assumed office but this month stood at N1.3billion while our monthly wage bill stands at close to N4billion.

The Governor lamented that even after President Buhari had directed that soldiers and mobile police men should be deployed to the state, there had not been any reports of the arrest of people behind the heinous crime. Ortom who advocated the ranching of cows in the country, recalled that Benue people had lived peacefully with Fulani herdsmen until four years ago when the crisis started stressing that the state had not known peace since then.

Responding on behalf of his colleagues, Governor Okorocha said the documentary shown to the Governors on the invasion of Benue by herdsmen was quite revealing and the killings condemnable. He said “we are here to show solidarity and our dislike to what happened here, a criminal is a criminal whether they are Boko Haram, herdsmen or whichever group; Benue state is central and key in Nigerian politics and these killings have to stop in the interest of peaceful coexistence of our people.”

Husband Who Threatened To Divorce Wife Over Addiction To Zeeworld, Telemundo Channels Forgives Her

Mr Chibuzor Eze, who threatened to divorce his wife few weeks ago over her addiction to popular foreign soap opera channels, Telemundo and Zeeworld has dropped the threats earlier made.

Eze, a paediatrician with one of the government hospitals in Abuja, said he had threatened to leave his wife earlier in the month because her addiction to the channels was interfering with their marriage.

The paediatrician, however said on Thursday, that his wife had made an effort to cut down the time she dedicated to the channels and invested more in her marriage.

“I am happy to tell you that my wife has really improved and I enjoy coming home now.

“She eventually listened to me and decided to put the time and energy invested in those channels into our marriage.’’

“She still watches the channels but now that she knows that she has a weakness for them, she sets an alarm to remind her to carry out her tasks and I commend her for the effort,” Eze said.

Eze, who earlier complained of frequently buying food from restaurants because of his wife’s inability to remember to make his dinner, said since he made his threat public, he had dined out once.

He said the dinning came as a way to apologise to his wife for the public humiliation he had caused her.

“Because I am always working, I don’t have the time to sit down and watch Zeeworld and Telemundo so I might never understand why those channels are so addictive.

“I love my wife very much and though we got married at a very young age, we have been married for 14 years so I know her abilities as a wife and a mother.

“Desperate situations call for desperate measures and I had to do what I felt was right for my marriage.

“Those who knew that I had gone to the media about this felt I took it too far, especially as I mentioned my wife’s name and allowed it to be published but I needed her to understand how severe the situation was.

“I didn’t want to come home and meet my house burning because she forgot that she had food on fire while watching a Telemundo show.

“She felt ashamed that her story was out there but I made her see where I was coming from and she made efforts to change so as a reward, I took her on a date to a fancy restaurant just so she would know that I still love and appreciate her,’’ Eze said.

India Probes Nigerian Student 'Attack'

India's foreign ministry says it is looking into an alleged attack on a Nigerian student by a local man in the southern city of Hyderabad.

Police said 26-year-old Bamilola Kazim was allegedly assaulted by Mohammed Gafoor after a row on Wednesday

Mr Kazim was treated for wounds at a local hospital and released. Last week a student from the Democratic Republic of Congo was beaten to death by a group of Indian men after an argument in Delhi.

Two men have been arrested in connection with the killing of the Congolese man.

Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted on Friday that Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj "had urgently sought report" on Wednesday's incident from the local government "and is monitoring the case".

Police said Mr Kazim allegedly parked his car in front of Mr Gafoor's house, and was attacked with an iron rod by the latter after an altercation.

"We have arrested the accused and the matter is now in court," Hyderabad police officer K Krishnaiah told BBC Hindi's Imran Qureshi.

Gideon Omodowale of the local Nigerian Students Association said it was a "racial issue".

"If he was a US citizen or an Indian, he wouldn't have been attacked. Later, some community people came and he [Mr Gafoor] apologised. We are ready to drop the case because we don't want it to affect other Africans," he told the BBC.

There are more than 4,000 students from African countries in Hyderabad.

Pastor Caught After R*ping His Friend's Two Children (Photo)

The suspect, James Boa

A Belhar father has been left in shock after discovering that his pastor friend has been molesting and r*ping his two sons.

According to Daily Voice, the 60-year-old dad says his kids, aged 7 and 10, said they had been molested by the man, who lives in the same area. The man now identified as James Boa has been arrested on a charge of rape for the 10-year-old.

Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk confirms the matter is under investigation and that a 60-year-old suspect was arrested. It was gathered that the act came to light after the man's wife caught his sons sneaking in the middle of the night.

“She noticed something was not right between them and when she asked, the younger one said his older brother had been bothering him and stuck things up his bum. When my wife inspected him she found blood on his underpants and damage to his anus,” the dad says.

“The next day we took him straight to social services and he was taken to the hospital where it was confirmed that he had been penetrated.”

The older boy confessed a week later, while seeing a psychologist, that the pastor had been raping him since January.

The angry dad says: “He made an attempt during the school holiday, gave him R25 and warned him that if he spoke to anyone he would break his neck.”

The accused is due back in the Bellville magistrate’s court today.

You Defrauded A Church? Court jails Colonel Okpala for Duping Church of N34.5m

Justice M. N. Yunusa of the Federal High Court sitting in Enugu has sentenced Col. Eugene Okpala (retd.) to 7 years in prison in a case of conspiracy, and obtaining money [N34.5m] under false pretences.

The convict duped a church, Dominium City Church, of the sum of N34.5million in 2010.

The EFCC said in a statement by its spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, that 62yrs old Okpala was earlier slated for trial on Wednesday but the case took a different turn when the retired colonel decided to change his plea from “not guilty” to “guilty”.

Okpala was said to have in 2008, approached a lawyer Vincent Obetta of Igwurube Chambers and a member of Dominion City Church under the pretext of having large portion of land for sale at N40m.

The complainant, Dominium City Church, in need of a landed property to build their school, negotiated and eventually bought the land for N34.5m. The church also paid additional five percent of the sum, which is, N1.75m as agency fee to Igbwurube Chambers.

Consequently, in September 2010, the church started developing the land, but another lawyer came up to tell them that the land belonged to one Chief Philip C. Asiodu.

The statement read in part, “Investigation was launched into the matter and the convict was found culpable and was arraigned. During trial, counsel for the EFCC, I. I. Mbachie tendered 13 exhibits which were admitted in evidence and marked as exhibit C1-13.

“Having changed his plea, the defence counsel, E. O. Isinu, prayed the court to temper justice with mercy saying, his client was a first time offender.

“Justice Yunusa consequently sentenced Okpala to seven years imprisonment on each count preferred against him. The sentences are to run concurrently.”

Okpala is on his way to prison to begin his journey as a prisoner.

Very Graphic Photo: Man Brutally Slits Wife's Throat In Lagos Over Alleged Infidelity

A man has slit the throat of his wife and mother of five in Oshodi,Lagos. The suspect, Sogei Jafairu, who hails from Etsako Central Local Government Area of Edo state, was suspected to have committed the act for ritual purpose. He was said to have returned home Thursday evening, after spending one week outside. His unsuspecting wife, Roselyn , who was a trader at Ijora market, prepared food for members of the family . But the food was alleged to have been poisoned by her husband, who also ate with her.

At about 1am, Jafaru was said to have been seen pacing around his one room and parlour apartment. He was said to have also been sighted licking some black substance suspected to be concoction to neutralise the poisoned food he ate with his wife. Thereafter, he allegedly slit his wife’s throat with a knife, while she was sleeping. Saturday Vanguard gathered that he attempted to stuff the lifeless body inside a container when he suddenly started vomiting. One of their children, Richmond Sogei (16) narrated the incident when Vanguard visited. He said

“My daddy and mummy never ate together since I grew up knowing them as my parents. We only saw them eating together for the very first time yesterday (Thursday) .Mummy came back from the market with some drinks she said we would use to celebrate Children’s Day today (yesterday) “We were surprised when we saw them eating beans and garri from same plate but concluded that it could be as a result of my kid sister’s birthday that was celebrated same day.

We all went to bed without any thought of the unexpected. But at 3am my daddy woke me up and instructed me to go and meet my mum in the bedroom. I left the sitting room where I slept with my aunt and three siblings. As I was going to urinate, I saw daddy vomiting in the bathroom. I went outside to urinate and when I came back, I saw him lying down in the bathroom. When I flashed the torchlight, I noticed that he was vomiting some black substance.

He also excreted on himself. Out of fear, I rushed to wake my aunt up to assist daddy. I also told her to wake mummy up to come and help daddy but she said that mummy was not responding. When I went inside and flashed my torchlight at her, I saw that the bed she laid on was socked with blood. On closer observation, I discovered a deep cut on her throat and passed out.

“Daddy initially said somebody broke into the room and killed mummy but we discovered that the gate was locked. Later he said I was the one that killed my mummy. How can I kill a mother that has been playing the role of a father to us?. She was even sponsoring my elder brother, Collins who just gained admission into the University. She was the bread winner. Twice, we have been sent packing by our landlords at Michael and Banjoko streets because daddy could not pay the rent. Why would anyone think of killing such person? “, he asked, crying.

Vanguard also gathered that the suspect had been beating the deceased before the incident occurred. On one of the occasions, she had threatened to quit the marriage. A relative of the deceased, Feronica Imomoh, revealed that the suspect accused his wife of infidelity. She said:  “Our family had warned him to stop beating my sister . He does not have any job, she was the one feeding him and paying the rent. Anytime she collected gifts from her relatives, he would quarrel with her, accusing her of sleeping with men. There was a time he took her to our village in Edo State to swear before a shrine that she was not cheating on him. Just yesterday (Thursday) he demanded N10, 000 from her. She promised to raise the money by borrowing from her friends”.

Jafaru who attempted to escape was apprehended by sympathisers until the arrival of policemen from Akinpelu who whisked him away and removed the corpse. Meanwhile, all apartments and shops at the two storey building located were under lock and key, as their occupants have fled, for fear of being arrested by the police. When contacted, Deputy Spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Chukwuma Ozoani, a Deputy Superintendent of Police said that the suspect had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation.

He said:”It was a murder case and the husband was suspected to be under the influence of drug. The case has been transferred to the SCID and investigation has commenced.”

So Sad! Abuja Youth Corper Pictured Sleeping on a Bridge in Kubwa (Photos)

The homeless corper in Abuja

It was just like an horror scene from a scary movie, stumbling on a body snoring away on a pedestrian bridge few metres away from Kubwa Garage. As if that was not enough, the snoring fellow was gorgeously cladded in the highly revered NYSC outfit.

Upon waking him up, the horror story he narrated will exhaust several pages. Is it not unfathomable that fresh graduate of one of Nigeria's ivory tower has been rendered homeless in the course of serving his fatherland?

To further add salt to his injury, he was outrightly rejected by the government parastatal he was posted to for no concrete reason. To further exacerbate his predicament, the unfortunate young Nigerian graduate is battling with pneumonia.

This is to serve as a wake up call to our policy makers to holistically review the NYSC Acts. Also, as a short term solution, we hereby call upon every well meaning Nigerian to come to the aid of Abuja corp members before the untold stress impinged on innocent corps members exceeds yield point.

Amazing! Honest Nigerian Lady Returns N5,000 Back To A Bank After A Cashier Over Paid Her

Read her story below:

“I just want to share my experience, My name is Vera Ikediala. I worked with Bethelmendels Int’l Ltd as an admin Manager. One morning my Boss gave me a cheque to cash N45,000 at Olowu Ikeja branch of First bank. The cashier paid me across the counter, in 1000 naira bills. But because I was in a hurry I did not count the amount. So when I got to the office I handed the money straight to my boss who counted it and discovered that it was N50,000, instead of N45,000. That means the cashier had over paid me with excess of N5,000. Immediately I went back to the bank to hand over the N5,000 back to the cashier.

When I got to the bank, it was obvious the cashier had not noticed her error in payment. I had to explain to her what happened. She was indeed over joyed and thanked me profusely. But what shocked me was that the guy closed to me on queue, who overheard our conversation interjected; “ if I was the one, I would not have returned that money lai lai”. He continued; “ babe you fall my hand. Do you know what N5,000 would do for you”

I did not bother to reply him anyway. For me, I had done the needful Many people might think this testimony is trivial. But let me tell you, that dishonesty is dishonesty. Somebody who keeps N5,000 that does not belong to him would as well keep N5 billion. I am sharing this experience so that many of us would understand that if we show honesty in the little things we do daily, collectively we could rid this country of corruption. I had a an opportunity to keep the N5,000 to myself. My conscience and upbringing won’t allow me.

There was no way the cashier would trace the money to me. But God sees all that we do. If I had kept the money the cashier would pay for her error in great pains. But of what good would that be to me? Have a great day...
