Prominent Military Dog, Jony Retires After Serving 68 Years in US Department of Defence

A U.S. Air Force dog identified as Jony, serving with the 20th Security Forces Squadron, has retired after nine years (or 68 dog years) of distinguished service, the U.S. Department of Defence has said.

Pentagon, in a statement, said Jony retired due to a compressed disc in his spine, and has been permanently put in the hands of its handler, Air Force Staff Sergeant Anthony Despins, a military working dog handler, who met Jony as his first canine partner in 2012.


“Together, the two used their individual skill sets to make a formidable team, eventually becoming certified as an explosives detection and patrol unit to keep people around the world safe and their fellow airmen out of harm’s way,” Pentagon said.

“Jony was really excited, always happy to see people and very energetic. Even back then, Jony knew what was expected of him and how to do his job. “Jony’s performance during his initial training determined what certifications he received; military working dogs can receive narcotics and explosives credentials as well as certification as a patrol dog.

“All their physical traits: their sight, their hearing, their nose, their speed, their teeth, dogs bring so much to the table – things we can’t do and the equipment we’re provided can’t do.

“Although the physical traits are necessary for success, it takes more than just advanced senses for a dog to pass initial training. “They must be able to listen to commands. If they can’t do that they’ll automatically be disqualified. Some dogs just don’t have the drive,” Pentagon quoted Despins as saying.

According to Pentagon, after Despins, Jony served with five other handlers, including Air Force Sgt. Kevin Davis Jr., and the pair were deployed to Afghanistan together in 2013. The Pentagon described Jony’s period with the military as a “distinguished service”.

“During one of his deployments, Jony went on more than 60 missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, finding six explosives and enduring five firefights. “Jony also went on seven explosive detection missions with the Secret Service in support of the president and vice president of the United States.

“Thanks to Jony’s acute sense of smell, Davis and his team were able to come back home to their families.”

According to Davis, the unwavering faith between military working dogs and handlers is not left behind on the battlefield.

“They’re wingmen. Not only are they there through the thick and thin, the good times and the bad times, they’re there to protect and they’re there to watch out for you,” he said.

According to Davis, the bond is incomparable to any other. “You can create a facade as you’re going through your day to day. However the dog knows; they know when something’s not right or if you feel down or depressed and are just trying to keep a straight face,” Davis said.

Air Force Staff Sergeant Robert Coughlin, another military working dogs handler with the Squadron, said: “Dogs would sacrifice and do anything for their handler. It doesn’t matter what it is. They have no fear of what they go into as far as the danger.”

Pentagon said Air Force Staff, Sergeant Kathryn McCarthy, also a military working dogs handler, read a poem titled “Guardians of the Night,” dedicated to military working dogs and their service, and traditionally read at their retirement ceremonies, in honour of Jony.

A Nigerian lady who lives in Italy, Mercy Alex, has shared photos of fellow citizens who lost their lives in the search for greener pastures abroad.

According to information gathered online, the Nigerians died while trying to reach Italy through the Mediterranean sea.

Mercy Alex who posted the photos which have gone viral online wrote; "After risking their lives no one live to tell the story, with tears in my eyes I pray may their soul rest in peace Amen". See How a Thief was Stuck in Chimney for Two Days While Trying to Rob a Building (Photos)

33-year-old man identified as Andrea Zunga, who accused of attempting a robbery, was stuck in a chimney at a youth centre in Zimbabwe for two days, before being rescued by a fire brigade crew and taken away by police.

According to a report by Zimbabwean journalist, Raisedon Baya, the suspect's accomplices who are still at large, managed to get in and out through one of the chimneys and got way with two computers, a laptop and a jacket but he got stuck in the other chimney which is blocked at the bottom.

The accomplices on realising that Zunga was stuck in the chimney fled with their loot and did not tell anyone about the mishap.

It was gathered that during his rescue mission, police were there on time to save him from an angry mob before whisking him away.

Zunga who looked like a zombie from a movie when he emerged from the chimney, is said to be on important medication after having come from South Africa on a stretcher, family members said.

Chigozi Iwuala woke from coma days after he was shot by a trigger-happy police officer 

The fourth person who was shot by a killer ex-police officer, Wilson Ufere, last Thursday along Anara - Umuahia expressway in the Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State has finally regained consciousness.

The victim, Chigozi Iwuala was nearly killed by the trigger-happy police­man, Sergeant Wil­son Ufere who has been dismissed from the Police Force for shooting four un­armed youths, and killing 16-year-old Obinna Iwuoha instantly in Imo State.

Ufere, had last Thursday at about 5:30pm at Ugwu Omiri Lawyer area, on the busy Anara-Umuahia Ex­pressway while on a road duty with two other col­leagues, shot at a group of youths on a church proces­sion.

He killed Obinna Iwuoha in­stantly, and left three others gravely wounded.

Nigeria Hit with Tragic News as Former Super Eagles Coach Dies

Chief Paul Hamilton 

A former coach of the Nigerian senior national team, Super Eagles, Chief Paul Hamilton is dead, according to the DailyPost.

Hamilton who also coached the Super Falcons had battled several ailments that led to the amputation of his leg at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) earlier this year.

He died at the military hospital on Thursday at the age of 75.

A 12ft deadly King Cobra snake who was so thirsty during a drought, broke into an Indian village in a frantic search for water, as dramatic video footage shows the kind-hearted villagers looking after their local wildlife.

According to Dailymail, a man who knew that the situation could turn nasty at any second, was seen pouring a bottle of water over the snake's head as it greedily laps the liquid, and holds a snake catcher so he can grab the serpent in case things kicks off.

Wildlife officials had said that the 12ft cobra was rescued from a village in Kaiga township in Southern India which have been hit by drought, making water scarce, adding that when the team of rescue workers found the cobra, the first thing they did was to offer it water.

The thirsty cobra was seen gulping down water from the bottle. The brave rescuer also poured water over the snake's head in an attempt to cool it down. The snake was later taken to an animal care facility.

Boko Haram Leader, Shekau is Not Dead - Defence Minister Admits

The Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali has admitted that leader of Boko Haram, Shekau is not dead 

The Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, on Tuesday, admitted that the leader of the Boko Haram sect, Shekau, has not been killed after the government had earlier claimed he was killed by the army.

Revealing more details, the Minister said it has been difficult arresting the sect leader because the insurgents normally wear masks to conceal their identities and divert attention.


The Minister stated this while responding to questions by from newsmen shortly after briefing President Muhammadu Buhari of his ministry’s activities at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. He however stated that Boko Haram has been defeated and stated that a visit to Sambisa forest will convince doubters.

According to him, the nation’s security forces have dominated the sect’s stronghold including Camp Zero that served as their spiritual headquarters and communication base.

The minister said, “I believe it is just a matter of time. It took America about seven to ten years to get Bin Laden. So. we will get Shekau as soon as possible. “The sect’s spiritual headquarters has been ransacked and vandalised. He (Shekau) is on the run. “He may be hiding in one of the enclaves of Sambisa Forest which we are dominating.

“We have opened up the place. We are using the place as a training area. The Army engineers will open up roads and we shall be patrolling and be ransacking that forest for the whereabouts of Shekau.”

But asked about the claim by the government in the past that it had killed Shekau, Dan-Ali said, “These insurgents have a way of putting on mask. There could be so many but we are looking for the real one.

They have been using mask to portray Shekau in one incidents or the other to give an impression that he has been killed so that we will relax. But we will not relax, we are on him.”
