CBN Orders Banks to Give Customers N375 Per Dollar for School Fees, Medicals

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will soon increase the disbursement of forex to meet demands for payment of school fees for Nigerian students abroad, medical expenses, personal and business travel allowances.
According to Leadership the apex bank will henceforth give weekly allocations of $1million to Deposit Money Banks (DMB) in the country, while the banks would be expected to sell to their customers at the rate of N375 per dollar.
The National Economic Council (NEC) had on Thursday, February 16, urged the CBN to immediately review the exchange policy. The council members had expressed concern over the current situation of the exchange rate and called for an urgent review of the forex policy, especially the gap between inter-bank’s and the parallel market’s rates.
A source in CBN on Friday, February 17, said that the apex bank is currently perfecting plans to effect weekly allocations of $1million for the DMB.
In recent times, the CBN, in meeting the dollar demand of the country, particularly for sectors that are crucial to economic growth and development, had regularly sold foreign exchange at the forwards end of the interbank market to clear the backlog.
Last month, the apex bank sold $660 million in three and five month currency forwards at an auction. Banks were asked to bid in a special currency auction targeted at clearing backlog of dollar obligations of manufacturing, airlines, agriculture and petroleum sector.
During the week CBN had released the total amount of dollar allocation to customers in December last year and January this year. Together, banks in the country had sold $2.83 billion for utilization in the critical sectors of the economy such as manufacturing, agriculture, raw materials, aviation, petroleum products amongst others in line with the 60:40 foreign exchange policy.
The CBN under the new 60:40 foreign exchange policy prioritizes forex sales to manufacturers, agriculture, plant and machinery, critical raw materials, among others, and requires banks to publish on a weekly basis the volume and value of foreign exchange that they sell, who they sell it to and for what purpose.
The banks, having sourced their foreign exchange from the CBN, International Oil Companies (IOCs) and other autonomous sources allocate it to their customers based on the 60:40 basis after it has been verified that the foreign exchange is not to be used for any of the 41 items that has been removed from the eligible forex list.
According to the apex bank, priority was given to manufacturing, raw material and agriculture above other demands as its disbursements are targeted at employment generating and wealth creating sectors of the economy.
In another development, Godwin Emefiele, the governor of the Central of Nigeria (CBN), has been asked to provide the federal government with an explanation into corruption allegations at the apex bank.
The Punch reports that the CBN was fired a query by the attorney-general of the federation and minister of justice Abubakar Malami (SAN) over allegations against the bank’s foreign exchange allocation and transactions.
According to Malami, on Wednesday, February 15, the fraud allegations against the CBN which were contained in several petitions to the AGF, were “supported by several documents.”

Hundreds of women in purdah, under aged children on Thursday staged a peaceful protest in Kano over incessant abduction of teenagers in the state.
The protesters marched from Kawo area of the municipal to Government House carrying placards with various inscriptions “Ganduje halt these senseless abduction” “who is after our children” “whoever is after our children is after us”.
The protesters who were mainly women in purdah and young were refused entry to Kano Government House by stern looking security agents on guard at a fortified gate.
Consequently, a senior police officer who was at the gate at the time of the protest received a letter submitted by the aggressive women and children for onward delivery to the Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
Receiving their letter of protest, the senior police officer expressed sympathy over their plight and promised to deliver their letter to the Governor who was in Abuja attending to other state’s matters.
Addressing Reporters shortly after, the leader of the protesting women, Malama Lami Abubakar alleged that rampant cases of under aged children within and around Kawo quarters of Tarauni local government area in the metropolis disappearing has unsettled families.
Lami Abubakar accused the local authorities of doing less in the face of the dwindling security situation, stressing that, “we found ourselves in crisis.
Malama Lami betrayed emotions during the tensed media briefing alleged that “in the last three days, two children were discovered in captivity at a resident of a man that supposed to protect his subjects but security agents appeared to have compromised investigations”.
Lami displayed some of the boys who were allegedly abducted by the suspected pedophile within the vicinity.
“We have made several attempts to arrest the suspect but on each occasion our ward head usually shielded the suspect claiming he is a lunatic” Lami therefore said “we craved for urgent intervention from the state Governor and all well meaning individuals to come to our aid and fish out those behind abduction of our children “.
The protesting women and their children also matched to the Emir of Kano’s Palace and lodged the same complain. So sad.

Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), have reportedly picked up Chocolate City founder, Audu Maikori.
DAILY POST reached out Maikori’s personal assistant, Edward Ayide over the phone and he refused to comment on the matter.
“I can’t comment,” he simply said.
When pressed further, Ayide seemed to imply his channels of communications were being monitored.
“I can’t even send you a message. If you have noticed, I haven’t even been regular on my social media pages. I’m sorry, I can’t make any comments”.
Two weeks ago, Maikori apologized to the College of Education in Gidan-Waya, Kaduna and the Kaduna State Government, for sending out false information about an attack on the school. Maikori at the time claimed that six students of the school were killed by Fulani herdsmen, including his driver’s younger brother.
The College of Education released a statement denying the incident and Maikori faced a lot of backlash on social media, with many saying he posted fake pictures.
He published a retraction on his Facebook page and claimed his driver, a certain Simon Joseph, misled him.

Ahmed Makarfi
The Makarfi led PDP will challenge the ruling of the Port-Harcourt Court of Appeal at the Supreme Court as anticipated. This is in accordance with the statement posted on her official twitter handle.
The statement read thus:
1. Two out of the 3 man Justices of the Appeal Court gave a scanty judgment in favour of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff while one for Makarfi
2. The Judgment has finally shown that the ruling Party, the APC is out to create a one party state in the country.
3. The Party is proceeding immediately to the Supreme Court to file an appeal against the ruling of today's appeal court judgment Senators Ahmed Makarfi and Ali Modu Sheriff have tested their legal muscles through various litigations in many courts in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, with each getting favourable orders and directives with the attendant effect on stability in the party.
Chieftains of the party from the two sides had at various fora expressed readiness to abide by the outcome of the appeal court verdict with a view to bringing lasting peace in the party.
A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt had last year gave legitimacy to Makarfi as the chairman of the party, while another court of coordinate jurisdiction in Abuja, headed by Justice Okon Abang, had ruled that Sheriff should be recognised as the chairman.
The PDP has not been able to play the role of leading opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) because of the crisis ravaging it from within. Meanwhile, a former Aviation minister, Femi Fani Kayode has reacted to Ali Modu Sheriff's victory at appeal court.
According to him, the decision of the Appeal court is a "victory" for President Buhari.

Thousands of Football Fans Beg Sanchez to Leave Arsenal

Alexis Sanchez
It seems like everything is slowly falling apart at Arsenal.
Arsene Wenger's 20-year reign in north London is likely to come to an end at the end of the season after a Champions League capitulation and many of the Gunners stars are set to follow him out of the club.
Mesut Ozil, who threw his Arsenal future on the likelihood of Wenger signing a new deal at the Emirates, is now looking increasingly likely to depart in the summer, as does Alexis Sanchez.
The Chilean was granted leave by the Gunners following Bayern's 5-1 hammering of the Premier League club, reigniting speculation of a move to Inter as he opted to break in Italy.
It will be music to a certain groups' ears, as a team of thousands in his homeland of Chile have had enough of their star man wasting his efforts at Arsenal.
Thousands of Chileans have organised a march in protest of Alexis continuing his playing days in the English capital, with the revolt set to take place on March 1.
A statement on the group's Facebook page reads: "We, as Chileans are tired to watch one of our biggest stars play on his own to make his team get through. "We don't want him to play at Real Madrid, nor go back to Barcelona, we don't give a f*ck where he plays, we just want him to fight along with other 10 players to get the results. "He doesn't deserve to be alone."

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) have announced that the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will hold in May 2017.
This was made known by the JAMB spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, through the Board’s Twitter handle @jambhq.
According to him, actual dates will be announced soon. He also advised candidates to beware of false dates and fraudsters.
“2017 UTME is scheduled to hold in May 2017. Actual dates will be announced soon. Beware of false dates and fraudsters,” he said.
Meanwhile, JAMB registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede has explained why an unusual delay has preceded the sales of application forms.
He said the ongoing switch-over in the major thrust of the sale of form which is the scratch card to direct payment into the Treasury Single Account (TSA) was responsible for the delay.
Oloyede said: “We are changing the major trust of the sale which is the scratch card. Candidates used to buy scratch cards to access the forms online and that has been abused thoroughly.
“What we want to do is for students to pay directly to government coffers and we are working out the process of doing so to avoid the type of abuse that it has been subjected to. So, we want to sell directly and to make sure that candidates pay into TSA account.”

A man has completely burnt down an entire hotel after setting himself on fire in Abuja. The man identified as Dr. Isaac Ojukwu who is said to be in his 60s set himself ablaze in a rented hotel apartment in Nyanya, a satellite town of Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT). He was burnt beyond recognition.
While narrating the shocking incident to newsmen in Abuja on Friday, the Owner of the burnt Hotel and Associate Professor at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Sylvanus M. Itodo (MON), said it still remained a shock, how an adult would just wish to take his own life, without a particular known reason.
“We were all sitting together that fateful night (Wednesday night) before he left to watch football match and I also left the hotel premises by 11pm, to go and sleep. “It was around 12am that I recieved a phone call from one of the boys in the hotel, crying, that my hotel was on fire.
Before I could get down here, the flame was everywhere; and it took the efforts of the Federal Fire Service to prevent the inferno from escalating to the surrounding houses,” Itodo lamented.
According to DailyPost, the victim hails from Ohuhu in Umuahia area of Abia State and had been staying in the apartment, Boundary Plaza Hotel, Nyanya, for the past 5 years. He is also said to have a German woman with kids.
An eye witness account by his direct neighbour, Ohize Yakubu, who has been living in the hotel apartment since the day of his wedding in 2013; said, those lodging in the hotel made frantic efforts to pull the deceased out of the building but he struggled and ran back into the burning room.
“We went to watch Arsenal and Bayern match that night, I came back to the hotel and Dr. Isaac came in 5 minutes later. After some minutes, I started hearing strange sound from his room, which is directly opposite my room. He was not shouting loud enough, all I could hear was ‘yeh’, ‘yeh’.
“At first, I was scared to open the door, because I didn’t know if it was a robbery attack, until I heard and recognised the voice of one of our neighbours, beckoning on Dr. Isaac to open the door and come out, shouting fire, fire.
“Then I asked my wife to take my son and rush out of the building while I joined other neighbours and we forced his door open, we met him standing in the sitting room while fire was burning in the bedroom. He was unhurt, we then held his hands and asked him to follow us. All of a sudden, he struggled his way from our hands and ran into the burning room.
“At this point, everyone ran back as the inferno had started escalating and all my belongings got burnt. My wife only escaped with my son. I was engaged in the process of rescuing Dr. Isaac, and lost all my belongings in the process”, Yakubu narrated.
In the case of Mr. Promise Nkwachukwu Okem, a young man who arrived Nigeria from Ghana, one month ago, he was able to pick a few things from his room (downstairs), before the fire degenerated into the zone.
He, however, said, two ladies who just finished serving the NYSC and searching for jobs, were not that lucky, as they could not pick anything from their rooms, save for their night gowns.
“They could not pick anything from their rooms”, Okem said.
The corpse of the man has been deposited at the Asokoro General Hospital by the Police, the family members are yet to arrive Abuja
Lucas Perez Ready to Leave Arsenal

Lucas Perez
Lucas Perez is prepared to leave Arsenal this summer in order to fulfil his dream of playing for Spain in the 2018 World Cup, Goal understands.
The Spanish striker has found game time difficult to come by this season despite impressing in the handful of opportunities he’s been given, including a Champions League group stage match at Basel in December where the 28-year-old scored a hat-trick.
He announced himself on English soil back in September when scoring two goals in an EFL Cup tie against Nottingham Forest and the summer signing from Deportivo La Coruna has made an impact in most of the 17 appearances he's played in this season.
Perez, who has scored a goal every 133 minutes this campaign having made just eight starts, has set his sights on a place in the Spain national team for the 2018 World Cup in Russia and believes he will be forced to leave the Gunners in order to get regular football elsewhere.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger met with Perez for talks over his lack of playing time earlier in the season, when the player told the Frenchman he was not happy with his lack of opportunities in the team.
Perez understands competition for places should be expected but remains confused as to why he hasn't been rewarded with a run in the team despite impressive cameo appearances throughout the campaign.
The £17.5million arrival for Deportivo is able to play across the frontline but has found himself behind Olivier Giroud, Theo Walcott, Alex Iwobi and Danny Welbeck in the pecking order at Emirates Stadium.
Perez missed Wednesday's Champions League last-16 first leg defeat to Bayern Munich with a minor hamstring injury and is likely to be involved in the upcoming FA Cup clash against Sutton United if he recovers in time.
