Why Baba Adeboye stepped down as Redeemed Church GO

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Enoch Adeboye, stepped down as head of the church in Nigeria in line with a proposed Corporate Governance Code.

Baba Adeboye referred to the governance code as he announced his decision to give up the position on Saturday, church leaders who attended the session, said.

The code, proposed in May 2015, limits the number of years heads of corporate organisations can stay in office. It is mandatory for the private sector.

The Code of Governance for Not-for-Profit entities is “Comply or Justify non-compliance.”

It is under the Not-for-Profit category that churches like the RCCG come under.

The code was later suspended, reportedly after the Attorney General, Abubakar Malami, opposed its implementation.

According to PT, it was unclear whether Baba Adeboye knew the proposal had been suspended.

While announcing the governance code in October 2016, the Financial Reporting Council, FRC, had said it would take effect from October 17, 2016.

FRC said, “In accordance with Section 50 of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria Act, 2011, which among other things requires the Directorate of Corporate Governance to develop the principles and practices of Corporate Governance applicable in Nigeria, the Council hereby releases the National Code of Corporate Governance effective 17th October 2016.”

It further said, the “Code of Governance for the Public Sector will not be applicable immediately until an executive directive is secured from the Federal Government of Nigeria. This is due to the fact that the enabling laws that set up most government establishments already carry some form of governance structure that will require an umbrella legislation to unify the different provisions of those laws to synchronise with this Code.”

AGF Malami later wrote a strong opinion against the said code.

Baba Adeboye had on Saturday surprised the top echelon of the RCCG by stepping down from direct leadership of the church in Nigeria. He announced Pastor Joshua O. Obayemi as National Overseer of the church in Nigeria.

Pastor Obayemi, who was Special Assistant to General Overseer on Finance, was appointed at the annual Ministers Thanksgiving at Shimawa, Ogun State.

Baba Adeboye will however remain the General Overseer of the RCCG Worldwide.

Five People Shot Dead In Florida Airport by Gunman (Video)

Scene of the shooting
Five people have been shot dead by a gunman at Fort Lauderdale airport in Florida, say officials. It happened at the baggage claim area in Terminal 2, just before 1300 local time (1800 GMT), the airport confirmed.

Five people were killed, 13 injured and one person was in custody, said police and local officials. Hundreds of people were standing on the tarmac outside the terminal as dozens of police cars and ambulances rushed to the scene.

One of the first reports of the incident came from former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer, who said in a tweet: "I'm at the Ft. Lauderdale Airport. Shots have been fired. Everyone is running."

A witness told MSNBC that the gunman was a "slender man' who was wearing a Star Wars T-shirt. The gunman, who appeared to be in his 20s, did not speak and was shot by police as he attempted to reload, John Schlicher said.

Florida Senator Bill Nelson told US media that the gunman has been identified as Esteban Santiago, but that has not been confirmed by law enforcement.

A witness told NBC News the gunman was shot by police less than a minute after the shooting began. "He was gunned down by police," Mark Lea from Minneapolis told the network. "It was absolutely surreal." "People were scared and frantically running to avoid being shot. People were tripping over each other. They were trying to make a fast exit out of the door."

Florida Governor Rick Scott is travelling to the airport to be briefed by police. President-elect Donald Trump tweeted that he is "monitoring the terrible situation in Florida" and that he has spoken to the Florida governor. "Thoughts and prayers for all. Stay safe!" he added.

Man Dumped On Wedding Day Over Low Sperm Impregnates His New Wife

A jilted 32-year old Nigerian man, who was dumped by his first wife on their wedding day over her suspicion of his having a low sperm count issue, has married another woman.

Interestingly, his new wife is now heavily pregnant for him.

The man, Ekene Uzoigwe, got married to Ifunanya Igwebuike, according to Igbo tradition and had wanted to consummate the marriage at St Patrick Catholic Church, Umuchu in the Aguata area of Anambra State.

However, Ifunanya, a graduate of Federal Polytechnic, Oko, did the unthinkable when she snubbed her groom on the day of their white wedding and called off the wedding, to the shock of many.

The wedding was to take place on 3 January, 2015 and guests invited to witness the ceremony were shocked when Ifunaya refused to show up in church to tie the knot with Uzoigwe.

After hours of waiting, PM Express gathered that she sent a message to the Parish Priest, Rev Father Lawrence Maduagwu, that she was no longer interested and asked him to cancel the wedding.

Ifunanya alleged that she could not go ahead with the marriage because she was a graduate unlike Uzoigwe whom she claimed was a school drop-out.

She also claimed that she suspected that her husband-to-be then was impotent because he had been unable to impregnate her after several months of their courtship.

Rev. Maduagwu had no option than to inform the groom and the guests that were already seated at the church hall that the wedding had been cancelled. This caused an uproar in the church with guests expressing shock over what happened.

After the sad event, Uzoigwe moved on and married another wife who is now pregnant and will be delivered of his baby soon.

Narrating what happened...

Uzoigwe said he met Ifunanya at their home town, Umuchu, where he proposed marriage to her and she agreed on condition that he would send her to school, which he agreed.

He said after she gained admission, he was financing her education and they agreed to wed during her final year.

He said he had paid her bride price and she was part of the whole wedding plan and he even gave her parents N160,000 to prepare for the wedding, besides other arrangements and expenses incurred on the wedding and reception.

The jilted man said Ifunaya did not considered it worthy to inform him about her decision to back out of the wedding until he got to the church and the priest had to inform him and their guests about the cancellation of the wedding.

If she had informed me, I would not have made arrangements. We had already cooked food and bought drinks for the wedding,” he said.

Uzoigwe said when he contacted her parents about the whole incident, they only told him that they could not forced her to go against her wishes but only asked him to come and take back the money he gave them to prepare for the wedding.

Uzoigwe said he was still in shock about that incident because he did not have any quarrel with Ifunanya before the fateful day.

He said he also made sure she was comfortable by making money available to her while in school.

Uzoigwe is a business man based in Abakiliki, the Ebonyi State capital, a soon-to-be father.

Mercy Aigbe Blasts Critics Who Say She Can’t Speak Fluent English

D3mn people are mean! How Saturday Beats reports it below…

When it was announced few weeks before the Best of Nollwyood awards that actress and screen diva, Mercy Aigbe-Gentry would host the event alongside comedian, Okey Bakkassi, it was delightful news to so many people.

But it was a huge disappointment especially to her fans when the actress didn’t show up at the event leaving Okey Bakkassi to anchor it alone.

However, there were speculations and insinuations that Aigbe backed out at the last minute because she allegedly couldn’t handle such event. More so, it was alleged that the actress who features mostly in Yoruba movies, is not fluent in English and could embarrass herself in front of the crowd.

But then, when Saturday Beats reached out to the actress, she said that she would not comment on the reason she shunned the award.

“I would not speak on why I was not at BON awards or why I did not host the event. I don’t care about what anybody says. If they say my spoken English is not fluent, that is their business. I do not speak fluently yet I have hosted various awards including the City People awards. People have watched my interviews on television and they listen to me speak on my social media accounts,” she said.

Inuwa Abdul-Kadir: "El-rufai Threatened To Beat Me Up"

Nasir El-Rufai

The National Vice Chairman (North West) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Inuwa Abdul-Kadir, on Friday said that he was reliably informed that governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State and former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of Kano State intended to pull him down because of the party matters in their respective states.

He claimed that governor El-Rufai once threatened to beat him up and prevent him from coming into Kaduna in the presence of other governors from the Zone in his office when he made an appeal for him to take leadership and drive a process that will harmonise, reconcile and solidify the party in the state.

Abdul-Kadir said this at the APC national secretariat in Abuja while addressing journalists on the allegations leveled against him by Hajiya Aisha Kaita, the APC Zonal Women Leader (North West).

“A week before she issued the Press Statement, I was reliably informed that Malam El-Rufai intended to take on me over the APC crisis in Kaduna State….everything will be done to ensure that I am pulled down; and this they intended to achieve by teaming up with Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the former Governor of Kano State as according to them, Senator Kwankwanso too is aggrieved by the party’s decision in respect of the chairmanship position in Kano State.

“However, this did not surprise me because of the previous encounters I had with Malam El-Rufai and his threats and outbursts,” the APC Zonal Chairman added. Hajiya Aisha had accused him of not only misappropriating campaign and office furniture funds but also single-handedly operating a bank account in the name of the North West Zonal Executive Committee.

Reacting to the allegations yesterday at a media briefing also attended by the Zonal Secretary, Alhaji Tukur Abdulkadir Gusau, Alhaji Abdul-Kadir, claimed that the allegations were intentionally fabricated to ridicule his person and bring him to disrepute.

“I wish to state here that the only funds that were disbursed to the Zone were done through the party account which was opened and operated at the instance of Party’s National Secretariat. To the best of my knowledge, nobody has ever made any remittance from March 2015 to date into the account of the party.

Since then to date, the Zonal Secretariat and the party vehicle are being maintained at my personal expense. In addition to these, my movements to attend party meetings in Abuja and within the Zone are all being undertaken at my personal expense.

These finances were duly presented, discussed and approved at the last NEC meeting of the party where Hajiya Aisha Kaita attended and made contributions,” said Abdul-Kadir.

He said the suspension and removal of Hon. Umar Haruna Doguwa, the erstwhile chairman of Kano State chapter of the party followed due process and was considered and unanimously approved by the ZEC at its meeting held on December 10, 2016 in Dutse, Jigawa Sate and attended by over 200 members, inclusive of 5 Governors and 4 Deputy Governors.

On the Kaduna APC crisis, Abdul-Kadir urged governor El-Rufai to give the necessary cooperation to the Aminu Masari-led reconciliation committee to restore peace, unity and consolidation of the party’s support in the state.

He said, “Disharmony amongst key stakeholders of the party in Kaduna State has become so evident and this is in no way helpful to the party. The party intervened and pacified the aggrieved members which brought about relative peace but Malam El-Rufai, governor of Kaduna State on the platform of the party and who is a key stakeholder of the party has not been forthcoming in all efforts to harmonise and solidify the party leadership structure in the state.

“On several occasions, I had meetings with him where as the leader of the party in the Zone made passionate appeal for him to take leadership and drive a process that will harmonise, reconcile and solidify the party in the state.

“One of such appeals I made was in the presence of other Governors from the Zone in his office but his reaction was volatile and he threatened to beat me up and prevent me from coming into Kaduna. I kept my calm as a leader considering the volatility of Kaduna State in terms of political reaction which cannot just be ignored, and the attendant threat it poses viz-a-viz the tremendous goodwill and support the party is enjoying in Kaduna State.

“The other Governors share the same concern with me and he was pacified and it was agreed, after consultation with all concerned, to appoint a reconciliation committee under the chairmanship of Governor Aminu Bello Masari to put some more efforts in reconciling our members into harmony.

“The committee is yet to conclude its assignment. But I understood that Malam Nasir El-Rufai is yet to give the necessary cooperation to the committee which I still urge him to do so.”
