GOODWILL MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI TO TROOPS OF OPERATION LAFIYA DOLE ON THE SUCCESSFUL CAPTURE OF BOKO HARAM ENCLAVE IN SAMBISA FOREST

I am delighted at, and most proud of the gallant troops of the Nigerian Army, on receipt of the long-awaited and most gratifying news of the final crushing of Boko Haram terrorists in their last enclave in Sambisa Forest.

I want to use this opportunity to commend the determination, courage and resilience of troops of Operation Lafiya Dole at finally entering and crushing the remnants of the Boko Haram insurgents at “Camp Zero”, which is located deep within the heart of Sambisa Forest.

I was told by the Chief of Army Staff that the Camp fell at about 1:35pm on Friday, December 22, and that the terrorists are on the run, and no longer have a place to hide. I urge you to maintain the tempo by pursuing them and bringing them to justice.

I, therefore, call on all Nigerians to cooperate and support the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies by providing useful information that will expose all the terrorists hiding among the populace. Further efforts should be intensified to locate and free our remaining Chibok girls still in captivity. May God be with them.

I also want to congratulate and commend the able leadership of the Nigerian Army in particular and indeed, that of the Armed Forces in general, for making this possible. This, no doubt, will go a long way in improving the security situation not only in the North East, but the country in general. But we must not let our guards down.

Once more, congratulations to our troops and all who, in one way or the other, contributed to this most commendable and momentous effort. May the Almighty continue to be with you. I wish you a Merry Christmas and a most rewarding and peaceful Year 2017 ahead.

MUHAMMADU BUHARI
PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA

Omg! Family of Seven Killed by Speeding Driver in Benue

An entire family of seven who were wiped out by a speeding driver in Benue State have been laid to rest in Mbaabir, Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State.

It was learnt that the man, who has been identified as Vangeryina Agbose, and his wife with five children in tow, were on their way back from an outing when they were crushed by a speeding driver in a Toyota Picnic around Taraku area of the state.

There was a lot of sobbing among residents of Mbaabir, the family’s country’s home, who trooped out to witness the burial of the family as they were laid side by side in seven graves on Wednesday.

It was also gathered from an eyewitness that the victims were being driven in their Toyota car by their father when the accident occurred.

He said, “the occupants of the ill fated vehicle were said to be coming from a family farm when accident occurred.”

He added that, “the car which had the man, his wife and five children including a one year old baby were driving from the Taraku Oil Mill road and on reaching the T-Junction he suddenly negotiated into the major highway probably without taking notice of the oncoming Toyota Picnic.

“The entire family members were instantly crushed to death, even their mother and the one year old baby who survived the tragedy later died before getting to the hospital.

“The accident created so much tension in the entire Taraku leading to aggrieved youths taking over the major road and the entire community in protest.

“It took the intervention of law enforcement agency and people of good will who pleaded with the irate youths to allow peace reign.”

LAKE Rice: Lagosians Decry Frustration at Purchase Centres

Massive crowd gathered to buy Lake Rice in Ikorodu area

It was almost a war scenario in many parts of Lagos earlier in the week when the much-awaited sale of LAKE Rice took off.

The rice, a collaborative agriculture venture between Lagos and Kebbi states, was rolled out to ease the sufferings of many residents of both states especially Lagos, who have had to pay more to purchase the staple in recent times.

A 50kg bag of imported rice currently sells for between N18, 000 and N25, 000 in the market depending on the brand and quality. The LAKE Rice – produced locally, was initially billed to sell for N13, 000 but subsequently dragged down to N12, 000 for 50kg and N6, 000 for 25kg by the Lagos State Government to allow more residents to afford and enjoy it with their families this festive season.

The rice is sold at about 15 strategic points in some local government areas of the state. However, on Thursday, when the gates to the store houses were finally opened for Lagos residents to make their purchases after the product was launched a day earlier by the governors of Lagos and Kebbi – Akinwunmi Ambode and Atiku Bagudu, it became a different story entirely.

Instead of finding relief in the scheme like they had expected, many people in fact had their problems compounded while trying to access the product. The frustration is mounting.

“In my life, I have never suffered the way I did on Thursday,” Kelechi Ukatu, a resident of Ori-Okuta, Ikorodu, told Saturday PUNCH as she poured out her anger. “I left my house very early that morning to go to Farm Service Centre in Odogunyan where the LAKE Rice was to be sold for interested buyers living around Ikorodu.

Of course by the time I got there around 10:00am, I met more than 200 people who had already registered and gone to pay in the bank. By the time it was my turn to register my name; I was the 700th person for that day alone.

“While I was still there, waiting to get a teller to go and pay in the bank, the 200 people who had already paid were asked to wait for their payments to be confirmed at the state secretariat at Alausa before they would be given their rice. Many of them waited for hours and later left the place angrily after some of the officials asked them to check back the next day.

“A lot of people also left in frustration after waiting several hours just to get a teller to go and pay in the bank. I left the place by 1:00pm without recording any success. On Friday morning, I went back to check, the situation was worse, I had to give up. I am just pained that I wasted that much time waiting in a queue for something that won’t even get to me. If not for God, I could have fainted in the midst of that suffering,” she said, fuming with rage.

Mr. Ayodele Bamgbose, another resident of Ikorodu, who visited the same centre in the Odogunyan area of the town to purchase a 50kg bag of the highly-sought-after rice for the festive season, told Saturday PUNCH that he had to take pain relieving medicine to recover from the ‘torture’ he went through in the process.

According to him, the ‘cumbersome’ nature of the process put in place by the Lagos State Government for prospective buyers to access the food item has dashed the hopes of many low-income earners like him, who had looked forward to benefitting from the initiative.

“It is a good thing that the Lagos State Government came up with this idea of selling bags of rice for N12, 000 each but their good intention has turned to a huge disappointment for many of us who cannot even get to buy the product even after visiting the Odogunyan centre for two days.

“Apart from the large number of people at the place, the process one is subjected to before he or she can purchase just one bag is not fair. In fact, if you are not healthy, you could faint in the process. “How can people wait in the queue for more than two hours just to register and be given tellers to go and pay in the bank?

Even by the time you pay and come back, they tell you they have to confirm if your payment has reflected in the server in Alausa. This is madness to me; it does not make sense in any way,” he said.

Kunle Adesina, an employee with a plastic manufacturing company along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, is also frustrated following his experience on Thursday trying to purchase a 50kg bag of LAKE Rice at the Farm Service Centre, Agege, Lagos – another of the 15 locations where the product is being sold.

His initial excitement of enjoying the staple with two of his siblings, who live with him, fizzled into thin air by the time he got to the place. The reality on ground was different from what he had expected to meet. “I was crestfallen when I saw the crowd there,” he said during a chat with our correspondent.

“Besides the large crowd, I was shocked at the lack of a concrete arrangement in place. “When I was told I needed to have one certain card and even had to pay the money at the bank and come back with the teller, I knew that would not work for me,” he added.

Findings by Saturday PUNCH revealed that there were also tales of frustration and disappointment in many of the sales points across most local government areas of Lagos between Thursday and Friday when a lot of people had expected to benefit from the initiative.

For many, the exercise had not lived up to their expectations especially with the criteria adopted to select beneficiaries.

Till Death Do Us Part! Elderly Couple Die Side-By-Side After 64 Years of Marriage (Photo)

Trent and Dolores Winstead died within hours of each other

An elderly couple, who were married for almost 64 years, died side by side just hours apart, Metro UK reports.

Dolores Winstead, 83, and husband Trent Winstead, 88, passed away together in Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. Trent had been admitted due to failing kidneys, and a healthy Dolores made sure she was always there to hold the love of her life’s hand.

Slowly, Trent’s heart began to weaken and he was admitted to intensive care – on the same date Dolores began to complain of a headache and started being sick.

Doctors revealed she had suffered a brain aneurysm and she was hooked up to a ventilator. The couple were moved to the same room, where Trent held on to Dolores’ hand. She passed away a short while later on December 9.

Dolores held her husband’s hand during his lengthy stay in hospital

The couple’s son, Eddie, lent over and told his father that Dolores had died. Trent turned to face her and blew a kiss – then passed away himself just hours later.

The couple’s daughter, Sheryl, believes her father died that day from a broken heart.

Speaking to Washingon Post, she said: ‘Because she was gone, he just could not handle it. We just watched him die. ‘I hadn’t thought about it this way at the time. (He) literally, he died of a broken heart. ‘Never in a million years did I think I was going to come out of the hospital with neither one.’

The couple were last week laid to rest side by side.

REVEALED! This is the Best Time to Have S*x If You Want a Male or Female Child

It is a common saying that ‘timing is everything,’ but when it comes to s*x, especially when it’s just for pleasure, that phrase may not readily apply.

Pleasurable sexual intercourse can be done at anytime and anywhere, because all that is important to enjoy it in that instance is the consent and cooperation of the other person, and in a favourable atmosphere. In fact, there are times that it is after the romp in the sack that some couples soon realise the inappropriateness of where they did it. It can be that spontaneous.

Be that as it may, findings have however shown that for couples who are aiming at conception, or more specifically, couples who are desirous of pre-determining the gender of their baby, timing is indeed everything.

In other words, the time of the month they have sex is just as crucial to achieving that goal. And a quote by Rick Springfield, an Australian author, says it all, “If the timing is right and the gods are with you, something special happens.”

Ordinarily, couples who want to have a child are often advised to have sex about three times a week, especially around the time when the woman ovulates to enhance fertilisation. But there is more to that if couples want a particular gender.

The easiest way to have male child

It should be noted that the sperm released by a man has both x and y chromosomes, while the eggs released by a woman at ovulation have x and x chromosomes. And for a woman to conceive a male, the man must release the ‘y’ chromosome because it determines the masculinity of a child.

While the x chromosomes equally determine the feminism of the baby. However, according to Dr. Rotimi Adesanya, a medical doctor, the ‘y’ chromosomes are more active than the x chromosomes, but they die faster than x chromosomes, which are weaker but last longer.

Therefore, when the Y chromosomes are dead, it remains the X chromosomes, and if it is the woman’s fertile period, the woman would likely have a ‘bouncing baby girl.’ Therefore, what should be done if couples want to have a male child?

Adesanya explained that a woman is more likely to conceive a male if sexual intercourse takes place on the day the woman is most fertile, which is the day she releases an egg and that is usually between day 10 and 19 of the menstrual cycle.

He said, “If the sexual intercourse takes place on the day of the woman’s ovulation (the day she releases an egg), which is the day 14 of the woman’s menstrual cycle, and the man releases sperm, that child is ‘likely’ to be a male.

This is because the man’s sperm has x and y chromosomes, but the ‘y’ chromosome that determines the masculinity is very active, so it reaches the egg faster than the x that is weaker. “That is why it is said that couples who want to have a male child stand a better chance if they have sex on the day the woman ovulates. However, I must add that it is not 100 per cent certain. It is a game of probability. Some people have tried it and it worked, while some others have tried it and it didn’t work. “That is why we use the word ‘likely’, just that the probability is high if they do ‘it’ on the woman’s ovulation day.”

He added that such couples still stand a chance of having a boy if they have the intercourse like a day after the woman’s ovulation day, because once a woman releases an egg, it can stay for between 24 to 48 hours. Thus, when the man releases sperm into her the day after her ovulation, the ‘y’ chromosome in the sperm would go faster than the x to target the egg that had been there already.

He said, “So, whether the intercourse happens on that ovulation day or the day after (though advisable on the ovulation day), it is most likely to be a boy. If it is after, it should not be more than one or two days, because when a woman releases egg on that day 14, by the second day, that egg would start degenerating and start breaking down to what comes out as blood during menstruation.

“Impliedly, if nothing happens to the egg like after two days, it will break down and come out as blood because the egg doesn’t last more than two days.”

Having a girl child with ease

Meanwhile, for those who want to have a girl child, Adesanya explained that the best way to go about that would be for such persons to have intercourse like a day or two before the ovulation day, more so that sperm can stay in a woman for two to three days.

He added, “If the intercourse happens like a day or two days before the ovulation day, the sperm would still be there, but because the ‘y’ chromosomes do not last like the x chromosomes, what would be left of the sperm would likely be the x chromosomes because they stay longer. And so, the baby would likely be a girl.”

Meanwhile, given the important role ovulation day plays in helping couples to have a chance of determining the gender of their baby, it is necessary to identify the symptoms that precede or characterise the coming of the ovulation period.

According to Adesanya, such things include abdominal pain, being moody, feeling feverish, because of the effects of hormones, increase in breasts size, vomiting for some as if they are pregnant, etc.

He added that increased lubrication of the vagina could also be a pointer, as they tend to feel wet at that period. “It is just like when an animal is on heat and it tends to move closer to the male animals. That is when a woman actually releases an egg. And that day 14 of the woman’s menstrual cycle could vary by one or two days in some women,” he added.

He stressed that even though those calculations may not be 100 per cent sure, there is high possibility that it works.

Meanwhile, for those who are only interested in having a child, regardless of the gender, some experts have stressed the need for such couples to have sex three times a week, so that at some point, the sperm would be in the vagina either a day before ovulation or on that day.

Adesanya said, “In a woman’s cycle, we normally say they should have sex from day 10 of their cycle, which we call the fertile period; because ovulation itself occurs between the 10th and 18th day of the menstrual cycle. “But the day that has the highest likelihood is that day 14. The principle is that from day 10 to 14, if sexual intercourse happens, that sperm would be waiting for the egg to be released.

“We also use the principle for those who don’t want to conceive. During that day 10 to 18, they should not have intercourse, until after that because that is when the woman is most fertile."

It should equally be noted that ovulation itself is a part of the menstrual cycle, which is usually between 26 and 31 days, which is when an egg is released.

And according to livescience, an organisation that provides information on health, technology and other related issues, a healthy adult male could release between 40 million and 1.2 billion sperm cells in a single ejaculation.

Notably, they are that many because of the stiff competition as to which among them would fertilise the egg.
