Kenyan Olympic Marathon Champion Tests Positive For Banned Substance

Kenyan long-distance runner Jemima Sumgong, who won the marathon at last year’s Rio Olympics and the London marathon, has tested positive for a banned performance enhancing substance.

The world athletics body the IAAF said that an out-of-competition test showed she had traces of the blood-booster EPO. It delays the onset of fatigue, enabling an athlete to run harder and for longer.

There’s been no word so far about what action the authorities will take as a result of the test. Kenya was last year declared in breach of anti-doping rules, and athletes underwent special testing for Rio 2016.

The East African country was deemed “non-compliant” by the World Anti-Doping Agency, but was reinstated before last summer’s Games. Between 2011 and 2016, more than 40 Kenyan track-and-field athletes failed doping tests.

Liverpool FC Given Two-year Transfer Ban, Fined 100,000 Pounds

Liverpool coach, Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool have been banned from signing any players to their Academy from other Premier League clubs for two years and fined £100,000 after they were found guilty of illegally approaching and offering an 11-year-old an inducement in order to join the Anfield outfit.

The academy player in question was previously registered with Stoke City, but even though a compensation fee was agreed between Liverpool and Stoke in September 2016 for his transfer, the Premier League Board rejected the move due to the Merseyside club offering to pay the player’s private school fees.

An investigation was launched into the move, which discovered that Liverpool had contravened Premier League rules regarding the signing of young players before they applied for his transfer.

A Premier League statement read: “The League found evidence demonstrating regular communications between representatives of the club and members of the player’s family. This included hosting them at Anfield for a match with expenses paid and other efforts to encourage the player, via his family, to sign for Liverpool.

League rules strictly prohibit the offer of any inducements to encourage a move."

The Premier League added that Liverpool had “cooperated with the Premier League’s inquiries in a timely and thorough manner and admitted the rule breaches asserted against them”, but have still been made to pay the £100,000 fine in full immediately.

However, the second year of the ban will be suspended for a period of three years, and will be activated if the club commit a similar breach. It prevents them from signing any academy player from other Premier League clubs, as well as sides in the Football League

Serious Commotion as Two Prominent Cherubim and Seraphim Leaders Battle Over Headship of the Church

His Most Eminence, Prophet (Dr.) Solomon Adegboyega Alao, Supreme Head of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church.

The leadership tussle in the Cherubim and Seraphim Unification Church of Nigeria has intensified following a Lagos High Court judgment in favour of Most Elder Apostle Adebayo Abiola claiming the headship of the church.

According to DailySun, the Church leadership has stated categorically that His Most Eminence, Prophet (Dr.) Solomon Adegboyega Alao remains the Supreme Head (Olori) of the church. This is in conflict with the judgement gotten by Most Elder Apostle Adebayo Abiola from court appointing him as the head of the church.

A press statement signed by the Secretary General of the Church, Apostle (Dr.) Tunde Ogunkunle, stated that the clarification became necessary because of surreptitious moves by some people to cause disaffection among the faithful without waiting for the conclusion of the legal processes.

He said it was known to all that a State High Court is not the final arbiter in any dispute, and that the Notice of Appeal filed on behalf of the church by its Solicitors, Messrs Wale Taiwo and Co, has since been served on all parties.

The appeal notice, Ogunkunle said, clearly spelt out eight weighty grounds why the judgment delivered by the Hon. Justice L. B. Lawal-Akapo on March 23, 2017 should be set aside by the Court of Appeal. There is also pending before the Court a Motion to Stay the Execution of the judgment pending the hearing and determination of the appeal.

Ogunkunle said, “We are known to be a law-abiding church and will not do anything to cast aspersion on the sanctity and integrity of the judiciary but that the judgment was not only totally erroneous but also ridiculous, and that is the main reason for the appeal.

“We also believe that once an appeal has been filed and application made to Court to suspend the execution of the judgment; and all parties thereto served, status quo remains. That is, Baba Alao remains the Supreme Head of the church until the final determination of the application and the appeal process.

“Again, the Ecclesiastical Council of the Cherubim & Seraphim Unification Church of Nigeria, at its emergency meeting held on March 27, 2017, affirmed its support and loyalty to the leadership of Solomon Adegboyega Alao as the Supreme Head of the church.

“We can only appeal to Elder Abiola to wait for the conclusion of the legal process and stop parading himself as the Head of the church, causing confusion and disharmony within the church while the legal process is on-going.

“We also appeal to all the C & S members worldwide not to be disturbed by the temporary set-back occasioned by the needless legal action, but should remain steadfast and continue to worship God in truth and spirit until the truth finally prevails,” the statement said.

The Church also said it would continue to update its teeming members on the progress made in this regard.

Fresh Currency Devaluation? IMF Says Nigeria's Naira Now Overvalued...See Detail

Gene Leon, IMF mission chief for Nigeria

While speaking in a separate telephone media briefing on Wednesday afternoon, Gene Leon, International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission chief for Nigeria, said the Nigerian currency, the Naira, is overvalued to the tune of 10 to 20%.

Reuters News Agency quoted Mr. Leon as saying that the naira overvaluation is “somewhere to the tune of 10 to 20 per cent.” Additionally, the IMF boss disclosed that Nigeria’s 2017 projections for non-oil revenues are more optimistic than the IMF’s, and authorities need to increase tax levels to diversify its income.

"The Nigerian economy has been hit by lower oil prices and lower production and the need for adjustment is recognised by the government,” Leon said.

“They have started in articulating the economic recovery and growth plan and what needs to happen now is that plan needs to be implemented and continue in a very resolute way.”

He also said that the IMF sees a need for a foreign exchange adjustment, in a bid avoid a disorderly depreciation of the naira. “We do find there to be some over-valuation at this point of the naira, of the official currency, somewhere to the tune of 10 to 20 percent.”

The IMF Staff country report, which was unveiled on Wednesday also showed that Nigeria’s multiple devaluation between 2014 and 2016, affected the private sector, especially the banks.

“During the past year, banking sector growth was dominated by the impact of a depreciating naira, given 45 percent of the banks’ loan book is in foreign currency,” the IMF staff report read.

“The depreciation of the naira may in some cases benefit those banks with FX assets that outweigh their FX obligations, through net valuation gain. “However, FX risks either from a shortage of FX or further naira depreciation could also lead to defaults, which will increase required provisioning and reduce profits.

“With about 45 percent of loans and 40 percent of NPLs in foreign currency, a further depreciation of the naira by 50 percent would increase NPLs net of provisions to capital by 12 percentage point (from 28 to 40 percent

ASUU Commences One-week Warning Strike...Find Out Why

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, University of Ibadan chapter, has declared a one-week warning strike over illegal pension deductions, fractional salary payments and non-payment of supervision allowance.

The decision was taken on Tuesday at a congress convened by the union and presided over by its chairman, Dr. Deji Omole.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that members also complained over excessive deductions from their March salaries. The management of the university was also alleged to have failed to declare the Internally Generated Revenue profile of the university.

According to Omole, the warning strike is, therefore, to compel the university administration to address the issues which ASUU said bordered on the welfare of its members who are being owed since 2010.

“The congress of ASUU, UNIBADAN, at its meeting of 4th April, 2017, having received permission from the national body of the union, hereby, declares a one-week warning strike.

“The warning strike will commence from 12:01 midnight of Tuesday, 4th April, to 12:00 midnight of Tuesday, 11th April, 2017. “The congress of the union maintains that the failure of the university administration to satisfactorily resolve all the issues will force the union to proceed on a comprehensive and total strike,” said Omole.

The congress, which was well attended, was also addressed by the national delegates of ASUU, which included professors Mahmood Lawan from Kano; Tony Monye-Emina from Benin; and Bebe Sese from Port Harcourt.

NAN recalls that the union had in a congress resolution in March, warned the university management to address its grievances bordering on reversal of illicit deductions and non-payment of promotion arrears.

The three non-academic staff unions of the institution had also been on strike since March 13, grounding administrative activities in the institution.

Germany to Deport 12,000 Nigerian Asylum Seekers

File Photo: Nigerians Deported from the United Kingdom

The German government plans to repatriate 12,000 Nigerians who are seeking asylum in the country. The Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Diaspora Affairs, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, disclosed this on Tuesday at the public presentation of two books “From Libya with Tears’’ and “Practical News and Feature Writing’’ written by former Managing Editor/Director of News Agency of Nigeria, Mr Dele Bodunde.

Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa, represented by her Special Assistant on Media, Mr Abdul-Rahman Balogun, said that the German Embassy in Nigeria had intimated her office on plans to repatriate no fewer than 12,000 Nigerian asylum seekers from the European country.

The presidential aide further said that about 128 Nigerians died while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea. She described the situation as unfortunate, noting that it showed Nigerians desperation to get to Europe by all means.

“Just some days ago, 128 Nigerians died in the Mediterranean sea out of 576. Most of them were from West African countries and they were on their way to Europe.

“Now, this is an unfortunate incident and I think it is better to remain in Nigeria and keep struggling, instead of making desperate journeys that could take their lives,’’ the presidential aide said.

Dabiri-Erewa said some Nigerians had been trapped in Libya and were subjected to various inhuman treatments and that only the intervention of the Federal Government had ensured the return of many.

Drama as Court Sends NSCDC Officer and Two Others to Prison Over Alleged Robbery

File photo used for illustrative purpose only

A Kogi High Court sitting in Lokoja has remanded an officer of the National Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Taiwo Babalola, over alleged armed robbery.

Also remanded by Justice Sunday Otu, of High Court 3, were Kolawole Samson and Ainoko Paul.

Further hearing in the case of criminal conspiracy and armed robbery preferred against the trio was adjourned till April 11. Babalola, currently serving with the Kogi Command of the NSCDC, was alleged to have committed the offense, along with the two others, on Dec. 9, 2016, at Lokogoma village in Lokoja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quotes Mr Kadiri Mukailu, victim of the robbery attack, as telling the court, in his testimony, that on the said date, the trio, armed with guns and other weapons, invaded his residence at Lokogoma, forcefully collected his car keys, and drove the vehicle away.

Mukailu said that the car, which has not been recovered, was taken away by the trio along with his UBA ATM card.

Others items taken away by the accused, he said, included two phones valued at N16,000, a wrist watch valued at N1,500, 10 pieces of cloth valued at N30,000 and the vehicle’s original particulars.

He told the court that during the robbery operation, which lasted for two hours, he had a full glimpse of the faces of the armed robbers because the lights were on and the suspects did not wear masks. The victim stressed that he particularly remembered Kolawale Samson who had ”scattered teeth”, wielded a big gun and called himself “MOPOL”.

Mukailu also told the court that his family members recognised Babalola as the robber that attacked his house when, on Jan. 8, he returned to the vicinity for another robbery operation.

“When the robbery gang came on Jan. 8, I immediately drew the attention of members of a local vigilante, who condoned off the premises and alerted the police, leading to the arrest of the suspects along with Babalola,” he said.

In his defense, Babalola said he was a neighbour to Mukailu at Lokogoma, but denied being part of any robbery. He told the court that he was in his house on Dec. 9, 2016, when three men, who claimed to be policemen, accosted him and told him that they were trailing some criminals, who entered Mukailu’s house.

“As a security officer, I asked if I could follow them, but they rejected that request. I even reported the incident to my superiors in the office the following day,’’ he said.

Babalola said he was surprised when he was arrested in his house at Lokogoma, on Jan. 8, along with the two other suspects, and taken to the `D’ Division of the Kogi Police Command.

The accused, however, admitted that he saw some people driving off in the said car, on the day of the robbery, but did not know who they were, and further told the court that the two co-accused were his brother and friend.
