There was serious tension in the Umueze 11 autonomous community
in Ehime Mbano Local Council of Imo State last weekend over the death,
suspected to be by suicide, of one Levi Uduji, who until his death, was said to have
been a gentleman in the area. The deceased left behind seven
children. As at press time, nobody has ascertained the real cause of his
death, but it was strongly suspected that Uduji must have hung himself for
undisclosed reasons.
According to a family source, the late Uduji’s lifeless body was
found hanging on a tree in the morning hours around the boundary zone between
Umuezeala, Ubara, Umuoparaiwe, a farmland adjacent to a stream near Umuozu,
Isiala Mbano Local Council of the state, when an intensive search for the
deceased was conducted by some community leaders of the area.
The source disclosed to The Guardian that the deceased was spotted
alone last weekend in the evening carrying a wrapper carefully put in a
polythene bag and heading to visit his sister in Umuezeala, Owerre, in the
council, not knowing that he had another mission in mind. Remains of the deceased have been buried at the scene of suicide,
after some rituals were done in line with the culture of the area, the source
concluded.
Police sources in the council said the matter was being handled to
find out what led to the man’s death. Before his death, the late Uduji was said to have lived in Benin
City, Edo State for several years before he returned to his ancestral home with
his family. His strange death has kept people wondering what must have led to
the suspected suicide.
“He was such a gentleman. We do not know what led to that,” a
source lamented.
