For allegedly flogging a teacher to death in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area, Anambra state, a middle aged woman and her daughter have been arrested by the police.
According to Daily Trust, the deceased, simply identified as Rita, an Igbo teacher and class mistress at Starlight Secondary School, Ogidi, was said to have slumped and died following alleged brutality by the woman, her daughter and another man.
Daily trust reports that the deceased had flogged the student, the daughter to the woman, simply identified as Chinaza, over her refusal to sweep the classroom.
A teacher in the school, who prefer anonymity, said the deceased, had on entry to the class that fateful morning, queried why the classroom was unkept, and demanded from her students who was responsible for the sweeping.
She was told that Chinaza was supposed to sweep the class before going home the previous day, but she did not.
When she asked her the reason for her negligence, the girl responded in a rude way that angered the teacher and she had to flog her.
According to him, while she was being flogged, the girl quickly ran out, scaled through the school fence and made straight to their house, where she narrated her ordeal to the mother.
The mother hurriedly rushed to the school together with sticks in company of her daughter and another relation said.
He however said the trio were unable to meet the deceased on arrival at the school as the teacher had left for a meeting outside the school premises.
All efforts by some of us to calm her down and allow the school authority to handle the case, proved abortive as she swore to revenge by herself. he said.
Daily trust however gathered that the deceased was later intercepted at the entrance to the school gate by the trio while on their way out and immediately pounced on her, beating her to death.
When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer, in charge of the area, Mark Ijarafu, confirmed the incident, saying We have arrested the mother, daughter and one other person.
The corpse of the teacher has been deposited at Iyi-Enu mortuary, while investigation is ongoing, he added.
