The court has heard how a police officer battered his wife to death and then stabbed himself in an attempt to cover it up. The man, named Adrian Goldsmith, 50, claimed his 49-year-old wife, Jill had attacked him with a knife after she was found dead at their home in Wootton Hall Park in Northampton on 26 March last year. Metro reports that the former Northampton Police detective was convicted by a jury at Stafford Crown Court, who heard how he ‘lied repeatedly’ and ’caused injuries to himself to enable the defence you ran to get off the ground.’ ‘What was abundantly plain during the course of your trial was that you set about establishing a defence in an attempt to avoid the consequences of your actions,’ said Judge Paul Glenn, who sentenced Goldsmith to life with a minimum term of 15 years.

You lied repeatedly to the police, to the doctors who were treating you and to the prison chaplain some weeks later when you were on remand.’
Jill Goldsmith was found with multiple mallet blows, predominantly to the head. The court heard how the murder was likely a ‘spontaneous’ killing that took place during an argument between the pair.
He has been jailed for a minimum term of 15 years.
