The Ogun state police has announced the arrest of one Edet Umoren in Esugbo, Itamerin near Ijebu-Ife in the Ijebu East Local Government Area of the state for allegedly beheading a 10-year-old pupil, Precious Adedeji. Adedeji, who was a pupil of Favour Nursery and Primary School, was the granddaughter of the proprietor, Pastor Joseph Olitoye, while Umoren was both a teacher at the school and a treasurer at the Olitoye’s church. Punch reports that Umoren claimed to have killed the pupil because Olitoye owed him N8, 000 – being the sum of his salaries for January and February. Umoren, also allegedly cut off the right hand of the 10-year-old girl after seizing and dragging her into a nearby bush when she and her friend, Patricia, were returning to the school from where they had gone to buy biscuit.
It was gathered that Patricia escaped from the scene and ran back to the school premises to inform the proprietor of the attack by “Uncle Edet.” Olitoye disclosed that Umoren left two short notes at the scene of the crime, claiming that he killed the girl because of the failure of the proprietor to pay him his two months’ salaries of N8,000.
The school proprietor claimed Edet resumed at his duty post on Thursday, the day of the incident, like every other member of staff but subsequently left around 10am. Olitoye added that he had already planned to sack Umoren on Friday for alleged disobedience and for stealing the sum of N25,000 from the church’s fund.
Ogun state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the incident, said Umoren said the suspect was arrested by a team of detectives at about 5am on Friday. He added that the Commissioner of Police, Abdulmajid Ali, has directed that the suspect should be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for investigation.
