18-year-old Pregnant Girl Rescued from Committing Suicide in Abia Forest

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Abia State command, Umuahia, has rescued an 18-year-old pregnant girl, Deborah (surname withheld) from a forest in Ossah Mission Hill, Umuahia while trying to commit suicide, The Nigerian Tribune reports.


According to the command, the victim hails from Ariaria, in Osisioma Local Government Area of the state.

Metro also gathered that the girl lost hope in life when her mother, Mrs Happiness, (surname withheld) remarried after her father died in 2013 and abandoned her with her other three sisters.

Briefing newsmen on Wednesday, State Commandant, Walter Akubiro Chika, said efforts made to re-right her future and that of her siblings could not yield any fruit hence, she decided to run to her boyfriend, David (surname withheld) who hails from Owerri, Imo State, in Aba.

It was learnt that Happiness took in for her boyfriend in the course of their living together, but he denied the pregnancy and pushed her out of the house. Chika said having been overwhelmed by her unbearable condition without a helping hand, she resorted to her wandering the street until she made up her mind on committing suicide.

Fortunately for her, the Commandant said an officer of NSCDC attached to the presiding pastor of Heavenly Jerusalem Assembly Ossah sighted her in the forest and rescued her.

The State Commandant said efforts made by NSCDC Anti-Child Trafficking Unit to reach the mother of the girl and her boyfriend proved abortive.

Chika, while parading the victim before newsmen assured her of adequate care by the corps and a brighter future for her irrespective of her situation. He, therefore, enjoined the general public to always give helping hand to venerable persons in the society, as such gesture goes a long way in blessing the society.

The Commandant, however, mandated the anti-child trafficking unit of the corps to carry its duty diligently to ensure all process towards handing the victim over to the Women Development Ministry in the state.
