A Kado Grade 1 Area
Court, Abuja, on Tuesday, sentenced a-28-year-old salesman, Vershima David, to
three months jail term for theft of under wear. The convict, of no fixed
address, pleaded guilty to the one-count charge levelled against him. The
Judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, said that the sentence would serve as deterrent
to other potential offenders. Sadiq, however, gave the convict an option to pay
N10,000 fine. The judge also ordered that the convict must pay N185,000
compensation to the complainant.
Earlier, the Prosecutor,
Cpl. Friday Idi, had told the court that the matter was reported by one Adeogun
Ayobami of Gwarimpa Estate, Abuja, at the Gwarimpa police station on June
4. He said the
complainant reported that sometime in 2013, she employed the convict as
salesman in her shop in Gwarimpa. Idi said the convict stole wrappers, some
under wears, sandals, shoes, one generator, an electric iron, weaving machine,
a plastic table and some pieces of thread, all valued at N185,000.
The prosecutor said
that the salesman ran away to unknown destination until he was arrested on June
4. He added that David had begged for mercy and blamed the devil for his
action. The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provisions of Section
288 of the Penal Code.
