Ex-England soccer star,
John Fashanu says he has been hit with a £3million divorce court demand by his
estranged wife. The former striker claims Abigail Onyekwelu wants £2.5million
up front plus £10,000 a month. Fash, 52, says she also wants him to buy a
new motor of her choice every two years. But last night Abigail, 48,
branded the star a “lunatic dreamer” and said: “I didn’t ask for anything cos
there’s no point killing a dead man.” The bizarre war of words between the
high-profile couple broke out after Fashanu, a former team-mate of Vinnie Jones
in Wimbledon FC’s “Crazy Gang” era, described his wife’s alleged demands as
outrageous.
Speaking exclusively to
the Sunday People, Fashanu said: “She clearly wants her pound of flesh now, but
financially she did very well out of our marriage. “I gave her £3,500 a month,
I bought her a beautiful house and a brand new Kia Jeep. “She’s welcome to
keep them, that’s no problem, but not a share of my assets. “We were only
married for two years and we only actually lived together for about the first
month of that. “For her to want £2.5million, it’s outrageous.”
But Abigail, who lives
in Abuja, Nigeria, said: “I’m the only good thing that has ever happened to his
life in the recent past. He came to my house with nothing. “It is very
unfortunate that I was in union with a lunatic, a dreamer, a man suffering from
temporal insanity. “John Fashanu is just using this opportunity to hype
himself. My advice to him is to forget that we were once married and move on.”
The divorce case is set
to be heard at Abuja’s High Court from September 22. Fashanu, a former TV
Gladiators host, earlier told the Sunday People his wife tried to kill him with
his Samurai sword after she claimed to have found him bedding two women at
once, including their maid. British-born Fashanu, now a businessman with
interests in London and Nigeria including a string of restaurants, said last
week: “During the marriage, my sister was attacked and I was stabbed in my hand
and my foot. “I was a nervous wreck – it should be me asking for compensation. “I’m
sure the judge will make the right decision.”
Abigail, who denies all Fashanu’s allegations, insisted: “The court
papers will prove I’m not asking for anything.”
