The suspected hijacker was said to want a letter delivered to his ex-wife. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has said: "He is not a terrorist, he’s an idiot. Terrorists are crazy, but they are not stupid."
Negotiations eventually led to the release of passengers and crew, and the suspect hijacker - named as Seif El Din Mustafa - gave himself up and was arrested. There were no casualties.
