The police in Lagos State have arrested a suspected kidnapper, Felix Ogbuefi, for allegedly attempting to abduct a schoolboy in the Mangoro area of the state. Ogbuefi and another fleeing accomplice, who posed as businessmen, allegedly accosted the 17-year-old victim on his way home. The incident, which occurred around 9am on Monday, the two suspected kidnappers lured the victim to go with them for a business deal. As the victim followed the men, some commercial motorcyclists raised the alarm, which attracted an angry mob.
Punch Metro reports that one of the men reportedly escaped on a motorcycle, while Ogbuefi was apprehended by the mob and beaten up. He was thereafter taken to the Shasha Police Division. A resident, who gave his name only as Francis, said the victim, a Senior Secondary three pupil, was believed to have been hypnotised by the suspects.
He said, “On Monday, the boy and his younger sister had arrived at the school. Then, he went back to their house to pick something. On his way, he met the two men who ordered him to go with them. They told him they were businessmen and they had some goods in the Abule Egba area to show him.
“The boy followed them; but his mother, who was waiting for him to return home, alerted some neighbours and they traced the boy. “It was some commercial motorcycles riders who helped in arresting one of the kidnappers. They beat him up. The kidnappers were already taking the boy away. The boy is back to his house now.”
It was gathered from a police source that Ogbuefi had, however, refused to speak at the Shasha station.
The source said, “The policemen at the station received a report that a man, suspected to be a kidnapper, was being mobbed around a school in the area. The operatives moved in to rescue him. As it is, the suspect is feigning madness. We have not been able to extract any information from him. He has gone dumb.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed Ogbuefi’s arrest, adding that he was being treated in a hospital and would be charged to court at the end of investigation.
She said, “The police found out that the suspect is a conman who attempted to lure the 17-year-old boy. The suspect was mobbed and he is currently receiving treatment in a hospital. He will soon be charged to court.”
