5-Year-Old Boy Falls Into A Pit Toilet At School

A five-year-old boy fell into a pit toilet at his school and was only discovered three and a half hours later by other pupils. When the kids finally told the teachers, they allegedly didn’t bother to help the little boy. The pre-school pupil was allegedly given a bucket of water and ordered to wash the stinking kak off his body himself. The incident happened at Malekutu Primary School in Kwabokweni, near White River in Mpumalanga on 8 September.

The boy’s father, Vusimuzi Mashinini told Daily Sun: “That night, he could not sleep. He cried throughout the night. It was only then that he told me he had fallen into the pit toilet at school. The next morning, I took him to the doctor as his tummy had started swelling. “The doctor said it was because he had inhaled the smell of faeces for a long time while he was stuck at the bottom of the toilet.”
Vusimuzi said he was angry that the school did not handle the matter better. “It is upsetting how the teachers treated my son,” he said. “They made him clean himself when he was eventually taken out of the toilet by other pupils. My son missed school that whole week because he was not well. One teacher even told us that it was not their fault that he fell into the toilet.”
Vusimuzi said his son was having nightmares and no longer wants to go back to school. He said his son has become a laughing stock. Vusimuzi claimed that last year, another pupil fell into the pit toilet and died.
Mpumalanga Education spokesman, Gerald Sambo said they were not informed about the incident, but promised to investigate.
