A
teenage bodybuilder in the UK who wanted to become the new Dwayne 'The Rock'
Johnson died instantly when an artery burst in his chest, an inquest
heard. Andrej Gajdos, 19, collapsed outside a Tesco supermarket in his
home town of Weston-super-Mare when his thoracic aorta ruptured. The
Slovakian born teenager had worked out twice a day and used steroids to grow
his muscles. 'He was loved and known by many people, each with their own
story to tell.
His
family wrote on a fundraising page that raised £4,000 to pay for his
burial: 'Andrej was a very keen bodybuilder with aspirations to become the
new Rock… he will never reach that height now.'
Gajdos'
drug abuse contributed to his enlarged heart – which was 50 per cent bigger
than average. Four different types of steroid were found at his flat in
Somerset and he had traces of the drug along with testosterone in his
system. Andrej's heart weighed 680g, and a normal heart is between 400 and
500g. He wasn't a normal man,' Dr John Oxley, the consultant who carried out
Andrej's post-mortem, told Avon Coroner's Court.
He
added: 'Steroids would have enlarged his heart, and having a big heart
predisposes thoracic rupture.'
Dr
Oxley said he could not be sure if Gajdos' steroid use had been the direct
cause of his death, or why he had such large organs.
The
teenager had previously been diagnosed with lung problems including
bronchiectasis and the inquest heard his GP also suspected he suffered with
acromegaly, a disorder caused by excess production of growth hormones.
