70-Year-Old Man Ties Up 25-Year-Old Wife And Son To Prevent Her From Running Away

A 70-year-old farmer keeps his young wife, who is in her 20s and their two-year-old son tied up. He has caused widespread disgust on Chinese social media where he has been called an 'old pervert' and 'rapist'. The man, named as Wang Mengyi, apparently 'found' the severely mentally challenged woman near his home in Henan, central China, four years ago. Four years on, he has fathered a two-year-old son with the woman who can't even tell him her own name.

According to reports, a photojournalist first visited Wang Mengyi and his family on September 8 after an introduction by former village official, Bai Daiyin. When they took photographs of him, he was said to be nonchalant about tying his son to a pole. He even smiled when he told reporters, 'I tie him up because I'm worried he will get lost. I'm old and I can't keep up.'

In fact, every time Wang Mengyi goes to work on his farmland, he ties up his wife and son to prevent them from running away and getting lost. Even at home, he occasionally ties them up for ease. He reportedly said as he tied his wife up, 'It's convenient so I can check on my wife anytime. I'm worried she will break out of the rope, run outside and get lost.'

Wang Mengyi told reporters that he had found the woman he now considers to be his wife on the side of the road near his home four years ago. She was severely mentally challenged and made no sense when she talked. He said he tried to ask for her name and where she came from but received no answer. He doesn't even know her age but estimates it to be around 25.

The farmer decided to take the woman home, where he kept her chained to a post to prevent her from running away. He was said to have taken her to the local authorities but with no solution to her situation, he brought her home again. Wang Mengyi justified: 'Although when I found her I was already over 60, for various reasons, I never married.' Just like that, the ageing farmer kept his new wife locked up. 

Two years later, they had a son, Qingtai, together but the old man hopes someone will adopt his child as the boy's mother has no awareness that he exists. The woman has been described as 'completely unaware' of the birth by Wang Mengyi's younger brother Wang Chunyi. Even now, she doesn't seem to have any affection towards her son.

Wang Mengyi lives in extremely impoverished conditions with his family and receives low income support from the local government. Their home is a five-room mud hut lined with bricks. He shares two simple rooms of less than 100 square feet with his wife and son while his younger brother, who lives on disability benefits, sleeps in the two adjoining rooms.

A third brother, who's no longer in touch with the family, had also once resided in the home. There are no beds, no flooring and poor repair and upkeep means the rooms are covered in dust and cobwebs while the walls are stained by leaks from the roof.

It's not clear whether the man's situation will be investigated or if he will face any charges over the allegations of rape.
