25-Year-Old Man Remanded In Police Custody For Killing Friend Over Ex-Girlfriend

A 25-year-old mechanic, Usman Abubakar, has been remanded in police custody for allegedly killing his friend, Jimoh Adio. The magistrate, Mrs. M.O. Ope-Agbe, ordered that he be kept in police custody pending the court ruling on the murder charge brought against him. Abubakar stabbed 29-year-old Adio in the chest over his ex-lover, Ayinke. The defendant had visited another friend’s house in September 13, 2015, when Ayinke, accompanied by her friend, came to beg for forgiveness.

He was said to have had a fight with Ayinke there and assaulted her. The latter then reported Abubakar to his friends, who allegedly went to his house and attacked him for beating up the lady. It was learnt that during the scuffle, which occurred in the Ojo area of Lagos, the suspect used a knife to stab the victim to death. He was subsequently arrested for the offence.

Abubakar said he could not marry Ayinke because her mother did not like him. He claimed to have stabbed the victim in self defence after about six friends attacked him on the fateful day. He was arraigned on one count of murder.

The charge read, “That you, Usman Abubakar, on September 13, 2015, at about 11pm at Iba New Site, Iba Town, Ojo Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully kill one Adio Jimoh, aged 29, by stabbing him with a kitchen knife in his chest.”

The Police Prosecutor, Woman Corporal Iyobosa Onaiwu, said the offence was punishable under Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria 2011.

The defendant’s plea was not taken. Iyobosa, who applied for the remand of the defendant in prison, explained that Abubakar confessed to the crime and was arrested with an exhibit.

She said, “We apply that he be remanded in prison pursuant to Section 264 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011. The remand is to enable us obtain legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.”

But the defence counsel, Spurgeon Ataene, insisted that the defendant acted in self defence and had no intention of killing the victim.

The magistrate ordered that the defendant be kept in police custody pending the court ruling on the matter.

The case was adjourned till January 8, 2015.
