Afghanistan Taliban Leader Killed In US Drone Strike

Afghanistan Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour has been killed by the United States in a drone strike, Afghanistan's spy agency has confirmed.

A vehicle he was riding in was targeted in a remote area of south-west Pakistan, near the Afghan border, on Saturday.

According to US Secretary of State John Kerry, Mansour had posed "a continuing, imminent threat to US personnel".

Mansour assumed leadership of the group in 2015 after it was revealed that Taliban founder and spiritual head Mullah Mohammad Omar had been dead for two years.

The Afghan National Security Directorate (NDS) said on Sunday that Mansour had been killed in the Dalbandi area of Balochistan province - the first official confirmation of the killing of the Taliban leader.
