The late Oba of Benin on the throne

The burial activities for the late Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba Erediauwa, began on Wednesday evening from Edaiken of Uselu Palace, the crown prince of Benin Kingdom, Eheneden Erediauwa.

It was gathered that Security agencies cordoned off strategic positions in Benin city, especially the roads leading to traditional places, where traditional rites will be performed.

The secretary of Benin traditional council, Frank Irabor, said the programme of events would last for 15 days, beginning from May 25, and end on Wednesday, June 8, adding that the funeral rites were the sole responsibility of the Edaiken N’Uselu and heir apparent to the throne.

According to tradition, all burial ceremonies in Benin have been prohibited and the public has been advised to stay away from places where the traditional rites will take place. Non-indigenes have advised to show respect and cooperate with Benin people, their customs and traditions.

Recall that the late Erediauwa’s death was made public on April 29. He ascended the throne on March 23, 1979, becoming the 38th Oba of Benin at the age of 56 years.
