The suspected abductors also regrouped to launch another attack on another victim when they were arrested by the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the Lagos State Police Command.
The state Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal who paraded the suspects at the command headquarters yesterday, said the suspects escaped to Lagos in a Toyota 4runner belonging to one of their victims and regrouped at Igando and were searching for another person to kidnap.
Edgal said when he received the information about the kidnappers regrouping, he immediately directed the Divisional Police Officer of Igando to arrest them.
In the process, one of the suspects, Kenneth Chinedu, was arrested and later led the operatives to arrest other gang members in their hideout.
According to Edgal, in his confessional statement to the police, Chinedu said that it was jealousy which forced him into crime.
“The woman we kidnapped is my girlfriend’s mother and I got myself linked into their family through their phone charging business. They have a telecom mask in their compound and I used to go to their house to charge my phone. I then made friends with them and the woman’s second daughter became my girlfriend.
“But a few months into our relationship, I discovered that the woman’s daughter was seeing someone else. I confronted her about it and she threatened to end the relationship. It is my cousin who sold the kidnapping idea to me.
“He told me that one of his friends, known as Onyemywa, is making money from kidnapping. That was why I decided to abduct the woman to make more money but I never knew this is how it is going to turn out to be,” Chinedu was quoted as saying.
The suspect and his gang members were said to have set the victim free after they collected N300,000 ransom from her family.
It also was learnt that the suspects demanded N6 million ransom but it was later reduced to N300,000.
The commissioner, however, said among those abducted by the kidnapers were a lecturer from the Imo State University and a medical doctor in whose jeep they escaped despite collecting ransom from his relatives.
He said: “The suspects also confessed to a series of robberies, car snatching which they carried out in Lagos and its environs.”
The suspects also led the operatives to where the stolen Toyota High Lander marked EKY 744 FH and another Toyota Sienna bus with registration number Epe 326 FH were recovered from them.”
Edgal added that the operatives were after the fleeing suspects who were still at large, to apprehend them and recover their firearms.
