A group of 50 'mourners' recently staged and attended a mock funeral for their friend who abandoned them after meeting his girlfriend. According to them, Keiran Cable, 20, has left his former life behind to dedicate himself to spending time with Jess Ferguson, 19. And after it felt like their friend had 'died' with his new relationship, they organised a vicar, a coffin and a hearse as well as producing an order of service with personalised hymns to celebrate his life and give him the right send-off.
Organiser Ben Sullivan said: ''None of us had seen him since then and he wasn't replying to any of our group texts or mails. A couple of weeks ago we were all in the pub and we all started saying 'RIP Keiran'. So we decided if he wasn't going to come out with us and was going to pretend he was dead then we'd organise a funeral for him.''
The group of friends all wore suits to the mock send-off and handmade a blue coffin with initials KC to perfectly fit Keiran. They got a funeral car, vicar, an order of service and even hymn sheets. A leaflet handed out to mourners read:
''Thoughts are with friends of Keiran at this dark time. However they shouldn't grieve for him but wish him luck as he continues on in his next life. Keiran has had a tough 18 months trying to keep his friendship with his friends alive but sadly the wait is now over and has floated up to the gates of heaven.
"What hurts the most is that we were starved of precious time to say out last goodbyes after his relationship status was changed from 'Single' to 'in a Relationship'. It is now time for us to finally say our last goodbyes by raising a glass for our friend Keiran.''
Kieran had thought he would be settling down to the watch the Rugby World Cup when his friends called him up to the funeral. But rather than be embarrassed, he took the fake funeral in good humour and even tried out his coffin for size.
Kieran said: ''As soon as I walked into the pub I was met by about 50 boys all suited up and cheering. I was in complete shock and didn't know what to do or say. My cheeks were aching from smiling so much. The boys made a massive effort and it was definitely a day to remember. I'm sure my girlfriend will be fine about it.''
Kieran Clarke's girlfriend, Jess Ferguson, 19, today admitted she was 'very surprised' by the mock funeral. She said: ''I am so pleased that the boys have received recognition for their effort, it is lovely to see Keiran's friends are so fond of him. Our friends and family know that Keiran and I are very happy as a couple. We love spending time with each other, but he knows that he can go out with his friends whenever he wants to.''
