A four-man kidnap gang fell into the police net in Imo State after receiving N510, 000 ransom for a victim who they later killed. The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Taiwo Lakanu, who disclosed this at the police headquarters in Owerri Tuesday, said the gang abducted their victim, identified as Madam Ogo Omereji, about three weeks ago, killed her and buried her remains in a shallow grave in Igwebuike forest, Awara Community in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State. He said after killing their victim, the kidnappers continued to pester the family for ransom, adding that the family had to invite the police to step into the matter after they had paid N510,000.00 as ransom and the hostage was still not released.
The commissioner said after their arrest, the kidnappers led the police to where they buried the hostage, adding that the corpse had been exhumed and released to her family for proper burial rites after an autopsy was carried out.
The suspects include, Gift Emeka, Sunday Uchenna, Emeka Chinedu and Peter Obido, who also hail from Awara community all confessed of kidnapping Madam Omereje, torturing her to death and burying her remains in a shallow grave in the Igwebuike forest.
They equally confessed to have collected a ransom of N510,000.00 from her family, and said the woman died in error. They stated that they took part in the crime to make ends meet.
