Nemesis caught up with a kidnap suspect along Sapele-Benin Expressway in Delta State in the early hours of Monday after he and his gang members had indulged in series of criminal activities. It was gathered that the suspect, identified as Wilson Oboroh was allegedly beaten to stupor by his colleagues after he leaked their secret to security agents through phone. But the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Celestina Kalu, who confirmed the incident, said the suspect was allegedly beaten to coma and abandoned by the roadside before he died. Kalu said that the police intensified investigation and while acting on a tip-off, arrested one of the gang members, who confessed to the killing of their member upon interrogation.
Kalu said the suspect gave his name as Edward (surname withheld), adding that he confessed to have been a member of the gang, who abducted a high chief in Mosogar (name withheld). The high chief had died in their (kidnappers) hideout around January this year. She said, “The suspect mentioned the names of others, who at present, are detained for interrogation. The police have zero tolerance for criminal activities in the state.”
Meanwhile, a gang of kidnappers, who abducted a man in Okpanam community near Asaba last week after tying him down in the bush, demanded for his ATM card and left him in the bush before they made straight to the bank with his pin number to allegedly withdraw N116,000. The victim, Ogbueshi John Akparah, was said to have been abandoned in the bush where he shouted for help and was rescued by farmers. Unfortunately, the kidnap suspects had disappeared after withdrawing money from his account. But Kalu, who confirmed the incident said based on the report by the victim, the police tracked and arrested a cyclist, who confessed to be a member of the gang.
Kalu said the police recovered the handset of the victim, including other personal effects from the suspect, saying that he would be charged to court after interrogation.
In another development, tricycle operators in Okpanam community, have accused the police of extorting money from them while they were engaged in their jobs. The leader of the tricycle operators, Ben Egedebah, alleged that the police often collect N500.00 each from them, added that those of them, who failed to pay, were arrested and dumped in the cell until they paid N3,000 for their freedom.
But the police image maker in the state dismissed the allegation as untrue.
