Nigerian human rights lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), was on Monday, totally embarrased after some youths booed him at the 14th Annual Chief Gani Fawenhimi Lecture in Ikeja, Lagos where he was one of the discussants.

The youths blocked the path of Ozekhome, who arrived the venue of the lecture at the Airport Hotel in Ikeja at about 1.30pm on Monday, insisting that the SAN would not be allowed into the lecture hall.

It was gathered that the senior Nigerian advocate's arrival was greeted with a loud chant of disapproval by the youths, who disrupted the lecture which was already underway.

The event was put on hold for about 10 minutes as chant of ‘Ozekhome, Ole!’ (English translation: Ozekhome, thief) filled the venue.

It took the intervention of the Chairman of the Ikeja branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, Adesina Ogunlana; and that of Richard Akinola, to shield Ozekhome from the irate youths who accused the SAN of “shielding looters from justice.”

It was learnt further that Femi Falana (SAN), who was also at the event, had to also leave the high table where he sat among others to placate the youths and calm them down.

Ozekhome is presently defending wife of the former President of Nigeria, Patience Jonathan in a $15.5million laundering case, defended Dino Melaye in his recall suit and also currently undergoing trial on a money laundering case.

Activists from the labour group and students union insisted Ozekhome would not be allowed to partake in the event claiming his presence is an insult to struggle and legacy of late Chief Gani Fawehinmi. Ozekhome used to be part of Human Rights movement before his switch to defending the elites and corrupt personnel within the political atmosphere.

Ozekhome who was later led to the high table, was seen sitting among other discussants, including musician, Seun Kuti; Fawehinmi’s son, Mohammed; and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore.
