A 38-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with manslaughter in the accidental shooting death of her 6-year-old nephew. The fatal accident happened on Wednesday afternoon when Kenya Brevard's nephew, identified by family as Eron Burks, reportedly asked to be left alone in the car while his aunt and a 13-year-old girl went into a residence on Lamar Street in Little Rock, Arkansas. When Brevard returned to the car a few minutes later, she found Eron lying down in the backseat, suffering a serious gunshot wound to his face. She came out in the yard and she was screaming for help. Then she just fell out in the yard, in the bushes. Then the neighbors came over trying to help her up,' neighbor Jamarion Humphrey told KTHV.
Eron was pronounced dead two hours later at Arkansas Children's Hospital. So far, authorities have released few details about what happened to Eron while he was alone in the car, but Little Rock Police Department spokesman, Lt. Steve McClanahan said it 'does appear to be accidental in nature.' When law enforcement arrived on the scene, they found a handgun outside the rear passenger door of the car.
Family in court for Brevard's first court appearance told Arkansas Matters that the gun was not Brevard's and she didn't know how it was in the car. They added that she 'loved her nephew very, very much'.
When she was questioned by police, Brevard says she didn't see or hear anyone around the car while she was in the nearby home.
Brevard was arrested on Wednesday and charged that night with manslaughter - a Class C felony that carries a prison term of three to 10 years.
A judged ordered that she be held on $10,000 bail. She is due next in court on January 19.
