Bukola Saraki is the new senate president, Ike Ekweremadu returns as Deputy Senate President


Senator Bukola Saraki of the All Progressives Congress, has been elected as the Senate President of the 8th National Assembly. He was sworn-in a few minutes ago.

He was nominated by Sani Yarima, former governor of Zamfara state and Senator Dino Melaye, seconded his nomination.

The clerk of the National Assembly, Abubakar Sani, called for more nominations and when no one came forward, he declared Saraki the duly elected president of the senate.


Also, Senator Ike Ekweremadu has been elected Deputy Senate President of the National Assembly. Saraki, a former Governor of Kwara state, was unanimously elected as the Senate President.

A member of the People’s Democratic Party, Ike Ekweremadu(representing Enugu West Senatorial District) who has been a senator since May 2003 was Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate for the second consecutive time in the 7th NASS.

Senator Ike Ekweremadu slugged it out with Senator Ali Ndume today where he emerged for the third time Nigeria’s Deputy Senate President.
