One Dead, As Police And Cultists Clash In Yenegoa


The Police have confirmed the death of Mr Blessing Amakiri during an exchange of gunfire between policemen and cultists in Yenagoa. The Police Public Relations Officer in Bayelsa, Mr Asinim Butswat, confirmed the death of Amakiri, who hails from Southern Ijaw local government area of the state, to NAN.
Butswat said the incident occurred when the police were responding to a distress call on a clash between rival cult groups, Icelanders and Greenlanders. He said the corpse of Amakiri was identified by his mother and had been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, while investigations had also commenced. 

The Police spokesman also said that two persons had been arrested and detained in connection with the incident. Butswat assured that at the conclusion of investigations, the file would be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice. 
NAN gathered that the incident, which occurred at the Ovom axis of Yenagoa at about 4.30 p.m. on Wednesday, compelled anxious residents to scamper for safety.
