A conservative rural community in Nongoma, South Africa, have been left in shock over the news of a 12-year-old girl impregnated by her 15-year-old boyfriend. When news of her pregnancy first emerged, the girl's parents were angry, thinking their 12-year-old girl had been molested. They thought she had been raped by an older man. But to their utmost surprise, the little girl who isn't even a teenager yet, confessed that it was not rape. She revealed that she had been having consensual sex with a 15-year-old boy she had been dating for a few months.
The news of her pregnancy sent shock waves in the village. A resident said: “We are all shocked as we’ve never had such an incident before. We hope this was the first and last incident in our area.”
The anonymous resident blamed government for giving South African children too many rights. Unfortunately for the parents, the boy cannot be persecuted because according to South Africa's Sexual Offences Act of 2007, children from 12 years of age are allowed to have sex as long as it’s consensual.
