Barbara Anderson, a disabled American woman called the country's National Health Service to report a problem with her wheelchair five days before it burst into flames and killed her, it has emerged. According to Mirror UK, the woman's sister has called for answers from a fatal accident inquiry into the tragedy, which is being held at Inverness Sheriff Court this week. Barbara suffered fatal smoke inhalation in the bedroom of her Inverness flat in August 2013.
At the inquiry, procurator fiscal Geoffrey Mayne said the medical physics department at NHS Highland, who deal with electric wheelchairs, said they had experienced no previous difficulties with her wheelchair. But he revealed they had received a voicemail from ex-Northern Constabulary worker Barbara, who had spina bifida, five days before the fire, reports the Daily Record.
Mayne narrated the text of the call to the inquiry: “I have just had a wee problem with my chair. "The lights on the control panel are flashing on and off from time to time. I think it might be the control panel. Could somebody come out to see me. "Thanks. Bye.”

Barbara’s sister, Darlene Kocsis, 52, from Toronto, said: “We need to establish exactly when Barbara raised concerns with her wheelchair – to find out whether those concerns were taken seriously and acted upon. “It is really important to establish whether anything could have been done better, and whether procedures and systems need to be changed to ensure nothing like this can happen again.”
