10 Feared Dead As Government Building Collapses In Abeokuta (Photos)

Tragedy struck today in Abeokuta the capital of Ogun State when an on-going Government storey building being constructed by Amosun led administration collapsed in Itoku market area of the State killing over 10 people with many sustaining injuries. The building which is reported to have more people still trapped in it was said to have collapsed at the early hours of today while traders and labourers working on the project have resumed for their daily activities.

Governor Ibikunle Amosun was seen at the scene trying to appeal to the people who were visibly angry at the sudden collapse which they blamed on the government. Officers of the Nigerian Police in its bid to prevent the crowd from recording or snapping pictures shot into the air and used teargas on the people leading to more crisis in the area.

An eyewitness said, the building collapsed without warning while a pregnant labourer and another woman with a kid were killed instantly. She said the collapse was due to the "insensitivity of the government who prefers to do shoddy jobs for the people while their personal houses received uttermost attention.

As at the time of filing this report, over 10 corpses have been removed from the collapsed building while more than 20 sustained varying degree of injuries with more still trapped in the building, Newsline reports.
