According to reports, the man pictured is Stephen Arthur. He was shot in the spine by a policeman in Ghana who absconded and has been on the run for years. Steve who is completely paralyzed from the waist down, has emaciated beyond recognition and has been left for dead. He is bedridden and will be dependent for the rest of his life. Below is how JoyFM reported the story:
A 25-year-old man has been left paralyzed after a policeman opened fire on a Nissan March he was on - at Bowjiase barrier around Kasoa. The incident which happened on January 4, 2011, has rendered Stephen Arthur bedridden.
Recounting the incident to Joy News’ Kwabena Ampretwum, Mr. Arthur said: “I was in a car heading for Kasoa and when we reached the Bowjiase barrier a policeman stopped the car and requested the driver to give him a Christmas gift”. When the driver handed him 10 cedis, he said another policeman who was sitting close to the police both approached his colleague and demanded why he took the money from the driver.
“There was a heated exchange between the two policemen and the one who took the money asked the driver to park properly until the issue is resolved before we could continue”, he said.
According to him, as soon as the driver revved the vehicle to park properly, there was a noise followed by a gunshot. The angry policeman opened fire on the car. Arthur fell into coma and recovered to find himself hospitalized at the Korle Bu teaching hospital.
“When I recovered from coma, I asked the doctor what had happened and he explained I will be unable to walk again because I was shot through the spinal chord”, he said.
